Turn signal stays on after car is shut off

i just bought an 86 911. When i kill the engine while the turn signal is left on, the turn signal stays on constant (not blinking). It only happens with if i turn off the car while the turn signal is still on.

Does this happen to anyone else? thanks

Yep,

It is by design. That way when you leave your car on the side of the road, you can leave a light on to let traffic know you are there.

Crazy germans!

By design, really...

Doesnt that cause some dead batteries?

Is it only on the left turn signal or right too?

It is with both sides. It will not drain the battery if left on for a few hours at a time. A few days - well, that is a different story.

This is why they're called "parking" lights. In most European countries, you are required by law to keep the street-side parking lights on while the car is parked. I think all European cars have this feature.

Dave, I guess the europeans just plug their cars in with big extension cords running to their homes in order to always keep their lights on while parked.

Have not seen a BMW that will run your battery dead if you forget to cancel the turn signal. Just another 911 quirk.

If you use LED bulbs, you could probably leave the lights ON all night.

Not a quirk. Mercedes has the same feature and it is not built into the turn signal. Two side marker lights use 12V and maybe .5 amps. Car batteries on avereage should be able to do 12V/500AMPs.
