I'm sure this question has been asked a 1000 times, but here goes. How difficult is it to remove the gauges and replace the bulbs?:confused:

Quite easy.

Ahhhh! Thank you!:) armed with that, I'll tackle the job.

pull out the gauges and look on the back, you'll see the little round guys that the bulbs sit it. I think they just pull out and you can replace the bulb.

Put the beer in your lap and you can do this all while sitting in the comfortable driver's seat.

You can also push the gauges out from behind the firewall. In other words, open the "hood" and you should be able to see the back(s) of the gauges. Push them out. The gasket is ribbed, so it's hard to push them out and easy to push them back in.

The bulbs are super small and you might need to pry them out. The bulbs ground on the body of the gauge, so you'll only see one wire going to the bulb. Try not to pull on this to remove the bulb.

I am replacing my incandescents with LEDS but ran into trouble with the tachometer - the tubes that the lamp socket slides into is different on this gauge and I can't seem to find a way to get them out! It almost appears that there is a tin c-clip around the socket but all attempts to remove these three have been fruitless. I guess if someone can confirm that you just pull on them I will try to get more creative with the prying. Ironically I can't separate the gauge from the harness for a closer look without removing these darn bulbs.

What year is your 911? My 1971 911S gauges just pulled out. The tach was a little tight coming out because it was so deep, I could not tilt it up or sideways without binding on the mounting hole.

When I pulled hard enough, it came out and the lightbulbs were clearly able to be seen. I only replaced the illumination light(s), not the turn signals. The bulbs just pulled out of the socket like all of the other illumination blubs. They were actually quite loose and I had to tighten the clamp a little. The instrument and bulbs were original to the car (37 years old)

Are you asking about the 993 gauges? If they are like the 911 gauges, they just pull out from the front or pushed out from the rear if you have access to the backside of the gauges. If they are not the same as a 911, I have no clue?

I went back out and decided to go with my brute-force hunch. With a sharp-edged snap on screw driver I was able to gouge into and then pry out the offending sockets. I would recomend simply not fully seating them when you re-install so that something is left above the surface to pry on.
