Front Condensor Bar
Does the front condensor bar serve any purpose other than to protect the condensor from damage due to parking blocks, steep driveways, etc? I've noticed that mine is not quite parallel to the front valance and would like to straighten it. There are bolts on either end, just in front of the "A" arms plus a small bracket in the center of the bar. The bolts on the ends are easy enough, although the bracket in the center looks a bit tough to get to. Can the bar be bent in place, or should I remove it, or leave well enough alone? The car is an '86 911 coupe.
Thanks. |
I removed mine with an A/C delete. Not very difficult to remove. The bar is pretty heavy duty and would probably require a torch/heat to bend straight.

That center bolt is easy to get to - it's in the trunk by the spare tire. What you see on the outside is a captive nut welded to the bracket.

If it bothers you to look at it, take it off and fix it. It takes less than five minutes to remove it and you need to remove it to fix it. When you put it back, touch up the sticky gray goo that waterproofs the bolt for the center bracket, to keep water out of your trunk. While it's off, repaint it.

I just removed mine last week - with help from this forum. The center bolt is what had me stumped. After I got it off I "tweeked" it a bit so that the holes would align when I put it back on. The bar is hollow&light and not too hard to bend - I did it by hand..

Keep in mind when you remove it and straighten it, the holes at the end may not line up anymore, and you might have to bend it again. I suppose the end result may be a nicer-looking bend.

I have a related question: Does the condensor bar interfere with a chin spoiler install? I'm considering this but it looks like there may be a clearance problem.
|
You can fit a chin spoiler to a car that has the bar. It's easier to install the chin spoiler on such a car, with the valance removed.

As always, thanks very much for the advice (and implicit words of encouragement). It looks like I now have something to do this weekend.

I removed my bar when I installed my spoiler. It gave me more room to work. It only takes a few minutes to R&R.
