Tail Light wiring....help please!
Just got my first 911 3 days ago. It is a 1987 Targa(see my newbie post for pics).
Anyway, the left tail light is inop. I figure it is just a bulb. Replaced the bulb, no help, then I notice that the bulb is illuminating but very very dimly. The filament is barely glowing orange. So I pull the tail light assy. to investigate. I pop the back cover on the assy. and see a scotchlok connector tapped onto the green wire that runs from the tail light to the side marker. A wire from this scotchlok connector runs out of the tail light housing to one of the wires for the license plate lights where it is also attached with a scotchlok connector. From what I can tell without a wiring diagram, there has been a problem getting power to the tail light. Some genius decided that rather than troubleshoot and find out the problem he would just tap power from another 12v lighting source being the lic. plate lamps. Problem is that circuit is not made to support the larger tail light. I am not sure why this isn't blowing the fuse. What I need from someone is a quick run-down of the wiring for the left tail light from the 7-pin connector that runs to the tail light and left lic. plate lamp. I need to know which pin supplies 12v to the tail lamp and where that wire goes on its way to the fuse block. I just orderd my shop manual and a couple of other books yesterday and I'm sure that info will be in them but I am anxious to get this fixed quickly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Clean your grounds, too. They are on the outer rear frame rails.
That 7 pin connector ties into the chassis harness, goes through the tunnel and into the front trunk. Several tail lights (and marker lights) are driven by the one fuse at the fuse panel. The Grey and red wire is for the tail lights, not sure which pin that is, but you can do a continuity test from the front. Disconnect the grey red at the fuse panel and look for continuity to the rear pin. Hopefully, your genius Previous Owner (known a PO around here) didn't try to fix too many other things. Doug
