911 gearbox 5spd problems can u help
 
hi new member here hope some nice person can help or advise me ive a old vw splitscreen with a vauxhall v6 fitted at the mo ,but ive just been givern a complete 1980 3.0 911 flat six porshce lump complete and 5speed gearbox which i fancy fitting in to mine but ive a problem with selecting gears from this gearbox as there sloppy and hard to get or find any gears,,and are they a better ratio then a AT beetle irs gearbox (3.88)which curranty useing in my split (4speed)

(are these prown for going faulty as i can only get some gears impossible to select the rest any infomation and help would be very greatfull thanking u adaptorman;)

People have often stated that the biggest communications issues between the UK and the US is the fact that we share the same language. To be honest, I have a hard time understanding your problem.

1) You have a split window VW with a GM V6 in it, but you're considering swapping it with a Porsche drivetrain that you have. Is this correct?

2) The Porsche drivetrain that you have has a 1980 3.0SC engine and a gearbox. You refer to a "911" gearbox, but actually there are a number of different 911 gearboxes. Could you post a picture of what you have? Is it aluminum or magnesium. Does the case have 3 segments (main piece, intermediate plate and end-cover) or 4 segments (Diff section, gear section, intermediate plate and end cover)? This will help us to determine if it is a 901, 911, 915, 930 or G50 gearbox.

In general the "911" gearboxes can be quiet reliable, although the synchros tend to wear on the lower gears. These are replaceable. My experience has been that the best way to describe the feel is "light". I don't think that Porsche's gearboxes have ever had the gated feeling like Ferrari's. Instead they are more like Hewlands in that as long as you push the lever in the right direction, it will go into the right gear. As far as the ratios, they should certainly be appropriate for a 911 type engine, and much more sporting then the original VW gear choices. If you don't like the ratios, there are always a lot of alternatives available -- often on eBay.

1/ yes i converted a vw splitscreen with a vauxhall 3.0 engine and a 4speed (beetle irs gearbox 3.88 ratio)
as the rest of information i will let u know soon as ive removed the gearbox (as im not really up on porshce gearboxs )and the gears are really slopy in the gear stick and can only get 3rd? and reverse thanks for the reply:)
