AC foam insulation question

The following pic shows the AC evaporator that lives in the smugger's box and the air intake "port" (labeled 9) that bolts in from the passenger footwell side, through the body into the smuggler's box, inserting itself into the same-shaped hole in the bottom of the evaporator housing.

When I removed this item(#9) there was deteriorated foam insulation around it but I couldn't tell what part of the piece it covered. It definitely covered the edge area between the face of this piece and the passenger-side wall of the footwell, but also seemed to cover part of the "tube" that slid through the footwell opening into the evaporator box. It's a pretty close fit as this thing slides into the hole in the evaporate box but I'm wondering if I'm supposed to try and seal this joint line at the evaporator box. This area is not accesible after bolting the port piece in so the insulation has to be attached to the port piece before installing it.

Does anyone know exactly how this is supposed to look?

Thanks,

John,

The object of this exercise is to seal off the inlet to the evaporator casing so that it only sucks air from inside the passenger compartment of the car, and nothing from the trunk. Theoretically, you want to seal the joint between the case and part 9 and between part 9 and the body of the car. I don't know that I would use foam to do this, as it is a pain to use and deteriorates over time. Anything that would remain a little pliable at cool temperatures and tolerate moisture would work.
