70 911e targa fully restored ... value ?

I have a line on a real nice fully restored 1970 911e Targa. What I know so far is from his email below. The pics he sent were real nice.. I think he is asking around 13K.. Is that a worthy deal??? Here are his notes on the car--

I don't have any history on the car. I bought if from a guy who was going to restore it but ran out of time and interest. He said he bought if from a guy that had found it stored for 10 years. It had a seized engine. It was stored indoors. No rust through on any body parts, just some surface rust. Was originally Porsche red/orange badly aged. It was stripped to the bare metal, acid washed, epoxy primered, fill primered, base coated and clear coated.

Engine was torn down to the crank, found one seized piston, most likely oil starvation. Was rebuilt with complete engine kit including main, rod bearings, all new seals. Crank and case were sent out and tested true, cylinders were measured within specs and honed by shop. Pistons were replaced with serviceable original type and new rings installed. Several valves were replaced, other machined by a local shop familiar with German engines. New guides and seals. New timing chains, guide rails and manual tensioners with lock rings to prevent failure. Oil pump tested ok, fuel pump replaced along with about all rubber pieces on entire car. New master cylinder, new flex lines, S type calipers overhauled and rotors turned. Fuel tank removed cleaned and reinstalled. CV joints repacked and boots replaced. Transmission shift bushings all replaced. Front seal of trans case replaced.

Shocks deemed serviceable, new tie rod ends and bump kit installed car lowered to European height.

Targa recovered. Set of Bridgestone Potenza RE750 205/55r15 installed on original rims.

MFI degunked, reinstalled and adjusted.

Interior mostly clean up, touch up, new material on one door panel and back shelf.

Many other new parts as needed. Shows 62,000 miles. No idea if accurate. I put on about 1500.

That sounds like a terrific deal-- if it is true. 1970 is a good year (2.2L) and the car sounds very original (MFI). You should post some pics for the experts to give you a better idea.

The lack of records regarding the engine rebuild, the brake rebuild, the body strip and repaint really really hurt the car's value. If a PPI mechanic tells you that all of the above were done, it is a good buy. I also recommend that you check the car out in person as pics can be deceiving.

BTW, targas are A LOT of fun and I highly recommend one.

Sounds like a great deal if it's as advertised. If the car is as good as it sounds and isn't modified it could be worth $20k easy.

Does sound like a good deal for a car that has a rebuilt engine, if it's as described.

You definitely need to worry about rust on a '70, so get some pics of the undercarriage, the bottom of the tank, the front suspension pans... the longitudinals.

If you inspect, see if you can look at the back parcel deck from inside the engine bay. Leaky rear window seals lead to rusty back decks and sometimes water will leak down and pool in the rear seat buckets.

here are a few pics.. I think I noticed a few things.. The driver seat has no head rest, the pass seat has a head rest ?/ Also, the color change from red to white.. Otherwise, looks good.

$13,000 for that car would be a great deal, assuming it's as advertised.

here are a few more pics.

thanks for all the input!!

Judging by the pics & the way the early 911 market is heading,
I'd say $13K is a deal !

lagrassa 03-17-2006 01:17 PM

I think it's a great deal for buying. If I were selling, I'd ask more.

I see the car has Texas license plates. If it's in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, I'll be happy to go and look at it for you.

Thanks Mike! I sent you a PM...

Looks like a great buy. Check thoroughly for rust though! Those deep six Fuchs on that car are particularly valuable.

Hey Mark,

I just spoke with Larry and am going to look at the car in the morning. I'll bring my camera and report back tomorrow...
