oil pressure guage problem, HELP!!!
Hi all, just started up my 3.2L aftersitting for 3+ years (previous owner) boy did it blow smoke for the first 4-5 miles now 15 miles later it is smoke free, thanks God! In any case i did a fresh oil change and put in 11 quarts, checked level of oil when hot its 1/4 inch above low fill line, the only thing is the oil pressure guage consistently reads upper 3/4 at # 4 and does not seem to fluctuate with RPM change at idle or 4-5K rpm is it a bad sending unit? I know that the guage is only there for convenience and that physically checking level is neccessary, but Im would still like to know that the pump is working when driving???? Thanks for any info, Johnny O

I think you may have the oil level gauge and the pressure gauge confused. The pressure should go up and down with rpm...reading near 10 lbs of pressure per thousand rpm. THe level gauge should move too...though it doesn't tell you anything really as it must be read on a warm motor on level ground at idle. If it doesn't move at all as you drive around, one of the wires has fallen off or the sender (in the tank, accessed under the fender) is likely shot. Could also be a bad gauge but I'd bet on one of the first two problems.

with key on , but engine off, DruckPress is at "$1" , with key off, its at "0" Er, do i need a new sensor, or just clean it, or ...?

Pull the gauge from the dash and check the wire connections there. Reach under the rear fender and feel around for the two (I think, might just be one) lines to the sensor at the top side of the tank and be sure that connection is secure. There are people who have repaired these sensors but mostly they are just irreparable in my limited experience. If you need the sensor, order from Pelican and prepare for some fun replacing it. If you get to that point, I have some suggestions which might help.

Johnnyo, your pressure sender on your year 3.2 is right there between the AC mount and the fan, big round cylinder about 3-4 inches tall. If you have a loose wire or disconnected wire, you will get higher pressures than real. I had my wire come loose and it started to bounce all over the place then when it finally jumped off, it went off scale high. While the car is running, have someone watch the pressure while you move the wire around to see if that is the problem, if not, you might just want to change the sender.
