new car .... suspension????

Greetings everyone.

I purchased a 1975 911s. Whenever I am driving on the freeway over 70 mph, the front of the car starts vibrating and shaking pretty violently. It feels like it is coming from the front suspension area.

i know it could be anything, but just wondering what do you guys think?

Also, I think i want to replace/refresh any parts that could be worn from the original 75 suspension such as bushings, the shocks, and torsion bars, etc, do you have or know where I can get a complete list of the parts i need/compatible?

Thanks in advance!

Have the wheels/tires balanced. Check your tie rods and lastly if everything else checks out, it might be ball joints, or could be some worn bushings. Both of my old 911s did/do the same thing.

Don't know the answer to your question, but I will give you some advice anyway. We require pictures of your car from all new posters, so I would post a pic ASAP, before the natives get restless.

Well, I guess I cant ruin tradition then.

It's getting the "finishing touches" now but these are the latest pics that I have.

I'll get new ones up soon, hopefully.

I originally got a 70T last year, and found it to have a very shaky front end (via the steering wheel) at highway/freeway speeds. I had the wheels balanced, which helped a LITTLE. I bought new ball joints (around $110 for the pair, IIRC), but was not successful at removing the old ones. The castle nut at the bottom of the A arms is just a pain to get off. I borrowed the correct tool from a guy locally that had one, used a jack for upward pressure, but couldn't get either one off. The solution would be to remove the A arm and cut off the nut, and replace it with a new one. ($17 each)

The coupe turns out to be VERY rusty, and probably beyond what I can or want to try to fix (I don't weld), and since a couple local p-car enthusiasts found 'Stinky' to be very solid and pretty complete, they offered her to me, sans engine and tranny (engine was seized anyway, but the Webers on it were good) and a few other parts. I transplanted a lot from the coupe into Stinky.

Once I had Stinky driveable, I noticed similar vibration from the front end. Good thing is I still have those ball joints, and they'll work in Stinky. Sometime, I'll just remove the A arms and do some refreshing. I don't have a list of other parts, bushings, etc, but will be looking into that, since I'll want to refresh everything while I'm in there. Might even see about powdercoating the A arms while they're out.

In the short term, rust repair and prevention are my primary concerns.

I'd sit back a few days and watch this thread. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people here, as well as lots like me who are learning as we go. I'm sure you'll get good suggestions. Good luck with it and keep us posted!

Nice looking car, BTW!

Thank you for your compliments.

Thanks Matt. Now I know where to start! Yup I've been lurking/learning on Pelican for the past year since I bought the car. I agree, the members here are very knowledgeable by far!

She has an '89 3.2. I'm planning on going with the Protomotive setup once that darn money tree in the backyard starts doing its thing

Vibration

Also check your wheel bearings. The wheel bearing lock nut may be loose.
