Help me price my 72 911T

I wasn't ready to sell my 72 911T, but a friend called and stated he knew someone looking to buy an older 911. I wasn't up to date on pricing and I'm happy to see prices on these older cars have risen the last couple of years. I would like an idea of what you folks think is a fair price for the car.

Positive
- Certificate of authenticity and all numbers match
- Repainted to original gold, nice respray but not concours. All body rubber and trim was removed for the repaint
- All new body rubber including targa seals and front and rear window seals. New rubber inserts on "S" trim and fr/rr bumpers, new rocker chrome trim, new chrom headlight rims
- New carpet and no tears in seats
- Carrera tensioner upgrade
- New Bosch starter
- New MFI
- Turbo valve covers
- New permatune ignition and recent full service with valve adjustment
- New fuel pump
- New fuel lines
- New tires with only 6K tread
- Targa top reconditioned, excellent shape
- Steering wheel rewrap on original steering wheel, nice rewrap job
- 109K original miles, car was sold in and never left Atlanta
- Many other small/misc trim/interior
- very much a head turner when the sun hits the gold paint

Negative
- car does drip some oil, was told leak from #2 cylinder
- couple paint chips from door dings, see pics
- lower passenger door showing bubbles, this was fixed when the car was painted but they reappeared
- no door pockets, too expensive to replace
- crach in dash by speaker grill
- small crack in front windshield
- brakes work fine but could use overhaul
- shocks/suspension should be overhauled

I was thinking of pricing the car at $14K but looking at recent prices I think I might be a little low.

What do ya'll think? Too high - too low?

Thanks, Eric

I'm kind of with Milt.... I own several targa's and would love to see these cars go for higher $$, but the reality is that the pool of buyers for a targa is much smaller than the buyers of coupes. Targas also have a few key prone areas for rust that aren't as big a problem for coupes. Your showing rust bubbles in the places that you show, also indicates that you'll need to look elsewhere (trust me, been there done that..!). Not that your car may have those issues, but I would be extremely sensitive to it if I were a potential buyer.

Positives are that it's a great rare color, it's a 72 with the trick oil tank, low mileage, looks very original etc, etc. The right buyer might indeed spend more than $14K....!! and that would be great!

You may want to check over on the early S registry, there is a thread running on prices for T's (and e's and s's).

www.early911sregistry.org go to the messageboard, the thread is running in the general info section, it's called "ebay sales history 911t". Start at the beginning and you can see final bids for 911t's, and some comments as well.

When I had the car painted I stripped off all the trim and rubber from the car, removed the front bumper and l/r rear panels, no rust anywhere. When the trim was removed near the targa bar, no rust, even underneath the targa bar inside the wheel wells. The previous owner did say the front suspension pan had some rust and they cut it out and replaced with new sheet metal. The welding was very good ( I looked) as the car owner worked in a shop that fabricated open wheel race cars. At that time I was somewhat ignorant and I didn't have the car inspected by a Porsche know-it-all. Other than what I described above, there is no rust on the car. I'm just really bummed the bubbles on the door panel re-appeared since this was "fixed" when I had the car painted. When you take off the door panel you can see the repair with some metal pins, but I'm not a body shop guy, I just know what was once fixed has come back.

The crack in the dash is near the speaker cover and windshield vent, a very small crack that is easily seamed together.

The bright metallic gold paint really turns heads on a sunny day. I describe the paint as Georgia Tech gold, it's very close to the school colors. Hey, I just thought of a new way to sell the car, drive it to home football games this fall!

Would you invest in a brake overhaul and shocks to make the car more attractive?

Hello fellow Ga Tech alumnus (ME 76)! Go Jackets! Dress her in white and gold!

Price seems right in the ballpark. Check latest issue of Excellence, Bruce Anderson's latest survey of market prices for early 911's, he prices them considerably higher than last year.

The bubbles in the door bottoms is usually caused by deterioration of the fuzzy strips that seal the glass on the outside. They rot and let water by to puddle in the doors on rainy days. Relatively easy fix but once it starts ....

How about complete tool kit , jack, spare with Fuchs, owner's manual, lots of receipts, etc. that all helps to justify the price. The COA is great, worth $100 and very nice validation tool.

The overseas market for these cars is hot right now, especially in Europe. They especially like bright colors and the Targas (which I didn't believe at first). It's a 70's retro thing. It's now very cool to drive with the top off five or six times a year and impress your friends with your hip taste. Gee, guess I've been Euro Chic for a while now and didn't know it!

please let us know what you get because I have a similar 72T in Atlanta, same mileage, 1 repaint in Irish Green, doesn't show quite as nice overall but could be worked over. Mine's a coupe. When I think about valuing the car, not sure whether it's a positive or negative that the engine has never been apart. Kind of a semi-survivor. I tend to think that if I did everything it needed including new paint I would hope it would get in the 14-16 range.

Looking at the thread I realized I double posted the pics of the paint buble and door ding. There is only one paint bubble located on the passenger door on the bottom. The door ding is on the passenger door, someone really nailed me or the kids dropped the shovel hanging on the wall on it!

I have original spare 6x15 fuchs with what I believe to be an original Michelin tire, how would I confirm? I have the original jack and tool set, although the tool kit is missing a few items.

Here's another shot of the Targa top inside, the Targa top is in prisitine condition after I had it repaired, I had to put in a new latch though.

I have original owners manual with dealer stamps, original registration, original window sticker and a folder full of receipts for everything I bought or had serviced. No receipits for previous owners but they didn't do anything.

The previous owner told me he rebuilt the engine, which I believed, but why would a rebuilt engine leak oil? I bought the car 16 years ago, it was my first Porsche. I bought the car with 103K and have only driven the car 6k miles in 16 years.

So what I'm hearing is 13-14K range is about right since the car needs a little mechanical work, although it's a great daily drivere now and just needs a diaper at night when she's parked. Heck, I should do the brakes, suspension and fix the oil leak and then sell for $16-17K!!

Beautiful car at a good price-- almost the identical car to mine except for the color. I think that the paint bubble makes people nervous that it wasn't a good paint job. Also the cylinder leak could be a deal killer. However, you have put a lot of good maintenance items into the car that really add to the car's value and I think it priced more than fairly.

Thanks for the heads up on the Excellence magazine article, I've got to get my hands on this issue before I meet with the prospect this weekend. That's great info to have when negotiating.

FYI, I picked up the May 2006 issue of Excellence and the values for a '72 911T are as previously posted:

Low=13948
Good=15859
Excellent=21230

Does anyone have any knowledge of what these low, good, excellent ratings really mean? For example, is good representing a daily driver with some mechanical and cosmetic refinements?

I showed the car today to the prospective buyer, a VERY knowledgeable car guy who races vintage Mustangs. After 2.5 hours we learned the car is a great example of the '72 911T. Aside from the front suspension pan being cut out and repaired and the one paint bubble on the passenger door, no rust or body issues were found. This was a more detailed investigation than when I bought it! I am very pleased with the results, helps my value situation. We found the brakes need overhauling along with the wheel bearings (I knew that) and the shocks need replacing (I knew that too), but no suprises.

Thanks everyone for helping me out, I'm more knowledgeable than I was yesterday. Kind of makes we want to fix it and keep it...how many times has that happened?

If this guy doesn't buy it, I'm going to officially list it for sale here and other online classifieds for $16 or 17K, based on the latest Excellence magazine article.

Yep, this is what Gold Metallic should look like, paint code #140. I will provide another pic when the sun is out which really makes the car shine, but it might be a couple days as it is pouring right now in Atlanta.
