Clewett Engineering spark plug wires - are they a good replacement?
I need to replace my '87's iginition wires and find the stock Beru's really too expensive for what they offer, mediocre performance. I've heard you can't run a high-output coil with the factory wires, they may short to ground. The Magnacor's seem to offer some improvement but have some issues with fit. I would like to run the Nology high performance coil so I can increase the spark plug gap to about .035" to .044". Will the Clewett Engineering wires handle this task?

Try the 7 or 8 mm Magnacaors ( black...blue),..instead of the 8.5 and 10 reds.

i am running clewett , stock coils, dual distributer. runs a hell of a lot better than bad old wires i had.
they are a very tight fit around the coil due to MEGA rubber boots. Other than that...they look good and feel strong.

Just get some bulk Beru wire and some M3 ends and make a new set or fix the bad ones.

I installed some on my 84 a couple of weeks ago. Noticeable improvement over the originals. Then again most anything probably would have been.

Check this thread before you buy the Clewetts.

I bought a pre-assembled set of wires from kingsborne with the M3 ends, separators and heat sheath for about $100. Screwed on my old Beru connectors with some dielectric grease, and I'm happy as a clam so far. No moisture issues, and I got to pick any color I wanted.

I have had zero issues with my clewetts. My '89 Carrera runs much better with them. Some folks had problems but mine have been great.

also a note...the problem was posted almost a year ago.
Id think Clewette would have fixed it.

It's easy to tell if the issue was fixed. If the heat sleeve is inside the boots, it's gonna wick water inside sooner or later. At the very least, there should be a silicone bead to seal each boot on both ends of the wires. The fix that Clewett did was to wrap a piece of shrink tube around each end without pulling the heat shield out of the boots. That will just delay the wicking problem IMO.

Less brakes, more gas!

I have the red Magnacore's... work great, but they are too short to run in the OEM locations. I was thinking of buying some wire and making my own this time around...

Installed Magnacore's about a year ago, great wires. They seal tight so no issues in the rain and the red is mighty purdy.

Check out the Kingsbornes . I'm really pleased with the quality, and there are a ton of colors to choose from.

Why not Reds?...
The fat wires are mostly fatter on the insulation only....now you've got hard-to-snap connectors on an overly-crowded dizzy....as well as tight fitment within each of the wire holder/separators....best to drill them out to some larger ID.... Etc, etc.....the smaller blacks don't need this fiddle-farting... - Wil
