Check Out the Carnage (Pics). 1st Step of Project
I was the idiot who got caught out on the Hangover Run New Years Day, this was the sorry image.
I have started to disassemble the mess and further assess the damage. The actual tub has less impact damage than I first thought, but the suspension and front wheel took most of the impact. The mounting point for the right side of the crossmember has been ripped out, and the sway bar has moved back far enough to crush the hard brake line. The A arm has also been pushed back about an inch. The tub does not look too bad, the oil cooler is toast. I can open and close both doors, the hood, trunk and rear lid, the right rear wheel is pushed in a little more than an inch. Kevin at Automotive Innovations has inspected the car and says it is diamond shaped by about 1.5 inches, and should be able to pull it back to normal spec. So the first part of the journey has begun, funny how I was looking for a project. So I plan to pull the engine and tranny, continue to dismantle and strip as much as possible before it goes to the frame rack. The plan is to create either an RSR or a 934, I still have not made up my mind yet, it will be a full blown track car, full cage, stripped, fiberglass doors, bumpers, hood, tail, lexan windows, big rubber and tweaked suspension, and whatever other smart ideas I can come up with. I plan to do most of the work myself with the help of this board. Let the journey begin.

Is that Buford T. Justice in the background of the first picture?
That's good news that your car isn't ruined. Hope everything works out for you in the end. I know you'll be posting pics for us.

Oh Haha,
Yes I think he is a reject from the Dukes of Hazzard. Jim, Yes its a big project, and I could probably just buy a clean tub and put it back on the road very quickly, as my engine and tranny are excellent as is the interior, I could transfer everything. Well at least it gives me something to do.

Your tub doesn't seem that bad. It would seem easy enough to put it on a Celette bench, weld the front suspension mount back in, get some new parts and reassemble. (I know its not really that easy, but maybe a new tub isn't neccessary)

It can be pulled back, no problem from what I've been told. The biggest job will be bodywork and paint.

Just curious, what actually happened? Did you lose it on a corner or did someone hit you?
I hope you can get it back to 100% again. I'd be sick if I wrecked my car.

Was on the ride, so I saw the carnage - came upon the scene just after the hit. Was very happy to see that nobody was hurt.
Glad you're going to rebuild your ride. It will be interesting to watch your rehabilitation project. Best of luck. Look forward to seeing the finished product.

Good to see your not parting it out.
If you have any other pics of it in its former glory lets see them. I saw a few a while back but forgot them. I was also wondering did the car snap on you in the corner and you just lost the rear end? |

It was a combination of wet road, wet leaves, too much throttle and a lot of torque, saved it from spinning, but hit a low wall, just ran out of room.

Wow..pretty sad schtuff.....I am sorry to see the carnage - you car is (was) a beaut! Pretty extensive dmage agreed, but kudos for not loosing your drive to get it back on the road and repair the car.
For what its worth...there is a very clean slantnose factory 930 that was on eBay (auction closed yeaterday - do a search) that has no drivetrain, it is in CA so local to you and there was only one bid at $5grand (reserve not met). So worse case you contact the seller, make a deal and transfer all your goodies over? It even has Fikse or Kinesis wheels too... Good luck... Yasin

Julian, I saw the original pics and posts and I felt badly for you as I still do. Good that you have your chin up. As you said, you wanted a project. Life works in strange ways.....
But, what I didn't know about was your track experience (BTW, beautiful car in the pics ) You have maintained a humble attitude towards this whole deal, but you shouldn't be so hard on yourself. But for a few leaves (and the fact that I stayed home that day), that could have been me or any number of us who have driven "spiritedly" on the Santa Monica mountain roads.Stuff happens and as we have said, the main thing is the only thing that got hurt was the car and maybe your pride. Rebuild both with our help and encouragement. |

I agree with Zeke. I also happen to think that it wasn't just a matter of running out of room. You had the bad fortune to catch a stone or concrete drainage culvert instead of a soft shoulder or a dirt berm. The stone or concrete was an immovable object and did more damage than you might have otherwise suffered.
(Of course, you also had the good fortune to have your off in a place where there was shoulder - same can't be said for a lot of roads up there.) Like I said - great car, glad you're rebuilding, look forward to seeing the process.

I remember when this happened. It broke my heart to see that happen to your car but like Zeke said, it could have been anyone that day in the damp conditions. But here you are now and it looks like you're making the absolute best of what was a bad situation.
Best of luck to you and keep us all informed of your progress. |

I have been track driving for about 9 years, both here and in the UK with Porsche Club GB. Have driven everything from Ferrari, Formula Ford, Vipers, Porsche and raced karts as well. I made a rookie mistake and got caught up in the moment. My wife told me just before the crash, I had a big smile on my face, **** happens.
I would rather crash my car while enjoying it , than polish and look at it.

Julian
been there, doing that. I wrecked my 911 to the "total loss" status. I bought the car back from the insurance company and decided to turn into something more special. It was the best "car" decision I ever made... Your car was pretty cool... but I see a 934 in your future. Good luck with the project. It will take twice longer than you think in your worste case scenario. I am not even going to talk about "The Budget". But please keep us updated. I always wanted to build a 934 with much newer technology (you know twin turbo, Motec ecu etc), a beast to drive on the streets that people would look at and gasp... But I was too chicken.... Go for it! |
