Chain tensioner collars for SC's
I am in the market for an SC, have been looking at a 81 that the owner has told me had chain tensioner collars installed, up until that moment I had never heard of them, can anyone give me any insight on this. Also, when installing the hydraulic chain tensioners, does the engine have to be pulled? Sorry if these are stupid questions, I am still learning.

Personally I would get rid of them, they are cheap metal discs that break easy, pieces of both of mine were floating around the chain compartment, in fact here is a picture of the broken collar on one of mine:
![]() I did my tensioner upgrade with the motor out, however the article in the tech section here shows you how to do it in-car.

Kirk,
The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. The collars you describe fit around the shaft on the chain tensioner and prevent it's total collapse in the event of a failure. They were, at one time, a pretty common modification. Tensioners can be changed without removing the engine. JR |

Adding the stop inside the tensioner so the piston will not collapse is a very good and cheap option too, this mod also allows for full Extension should the chain go slack
Shops that don't recommend Carrera Tensioner Update?
