1985 911 shifter
Question:
On a 1985 911 should the stock shifter return to the center in the neutral position. I would think there should be a spring centering the shifter so it would line up with the 3rd and 4th gear. Thanks |

No, the stock shifter only has spring load resistance for the 5/R plane. The shifter will flop equally between the 1/2 and 3/4 planes while in neutral. There are kits you can install to give you spring resistance for the 1/2 plane, but I have no experience with such a set-up.

I put a Siene Sytem shift gate on my '85 915 trans. I does the same thing for 1st and 2nd gear as the stock shifter does for 5th and reverse. I think I paid $125 for it. Add a Stomski shift coupler and new shift bushing and you have pure 915 shifting nervana! Here's a shot of the Siene System installed on a 915 housing.
