quarter window weatherstripping
 

I have been trying to slip on the new weatherstripping on the rear quarter windows for the past hour and have only gotten about 10 inches. The car is a 69 and i am talking about the peice that wraps around the actual window. Is this just something that takes a while or am i doing it wrong??

It takes a while. You need lubricant as well and lots of it. Very soapy water (or a little water in the soap ;)) works. Silicone works, but it's hard to hold onto the rubber.

I used to put handgrips on bicycle handlebars with soapy water and when it dried, the grips stuck well. I don't know how they do it today, but that would not be the case with silicone.

To be quite honest - it is a real PITA. I did both of mine about 6 months ago. What I found was if you place the frames and the rubber weather stips in a bathtub filled with really hot water for about 5 minutes, it makes the job far easier. The metal will expand just a bit and the rubber will become more pliable. I used a plastic bicycle tire iron to help slot the rubber in. P.S. You have to be extremely patient. They have a tendency to pop off if not properly seated.

attn. Where does one buy said weather strip? Mine only go along the bottom of the window and I'd like to replace them with new ones. Do they normally go all or most of the way around? Thanks Roadslayer

The last time I put on handle bar grips I used hairspray helps the grip slide on but holds it in place when everything dries up.

attn. Rich76. Gee,that was fast. Maybe I misunderstood the question. What I'm asking about is the plasticy trim piece that goes along the bottom of the rear window. Not the weather seal that goes all the way around the rear fold out window. My piece is 'off white', made of hard rubber stuff and is 'channel' shaped and presses down onto the lower lip of the quarter panel. This serves as a decorative trim piece between the window frame and interior side panel. Confused now? I am! It seems to me that piece should go all the way around the window instead of just along the bottom. Your reply is much appreciated. Roadslayer

You are correct that the piece you are talking about serves as a trim piece between the quarter panel & the window. You must have a later car, since they were chromed metal on the earlier cars. Some suggestions: 1. Ebay, 2. Advertise/browse the classifieds on this BBS, 3. dealer (probably super expensive), 4. Auto swap meets.

Ooops sorry about that. I bet if you called pelican they might be able to help you locate the piece you are looking for. Or a want to buy add in the for sale section as mentioned above. I saw a pair of the chrome ones up for sale on ebay last week. They went for 46 bucks the item number was 4619788822. I guess there is a difference between Short wheel base cars (pre 1969) and long wheel base cars (1969 and up) so be sure if you find a set that they fall into the category that you need. If you did not find them from above I am sure a dismantler could find you some. Look at dart auto in denver or la porsche dismantler.
