3.2 engine kit price check
I have a friend that just yanked a 3.2 out of his car, I it had a broken head stud. I just talked to him and he is going to go back to the old 2.7 he had, he wants to sell this engine, my point is how much is this set up worth, I think the engine should be cosidered a core plus all the electronics and the tranny. what do you guys think? I really want a 3.2 for my car
Thanks |
Well conventional wisdom would suggest that you take the price of a "good" motor with all that kit (probably around $6500) and subtract the cost of a rebuild....probably around $6500. Oops...that doesn't work....
Sadly, it's probably worth more in parts. But if you can do your own rebuilding, maybe $1500? Probably not much help... :( |
How many miles are on the car. Does the tranny need to be rebuilt too?
Engine with electrical I would guess between $2000-$2500. Tranny I would guess about $600-$900 or more if it doesn't need to be rebuilt. I probably offer something like $2500-$3000 for the whole set up and see what he says. I think this would give you a good starting place for negotiations on a final price. Good Luck! |
I'm with Doug, as a core I wouldn't offer more than $1500 as it is going to cost you $4K-$6K to rebuild it.

I see Kurt and Doug both have a core value of about $1500. Is that just for the engine?
My numbers were more of a total package. Including all the electronics, cpu, transmission, intake and exhaust system, hoses, fuel lines, tons of incidentals, etc, etc, etc. I would get everything you could get, even some linkages that may not work with his set up. I think when you take into account all the rest of the stuff that is included you'll end up being between $2500 and $3000. Besides, it's your friend and maybe you can help him set up his ride and have him help you set up your ride. If you do this you may end up with even more parts as he finds he won't need them with his setup. So, if you pay a little more upfront I think you'd get that back in misc parts later on. |
Tough to price when you throw in the "buddy" factor. My suggestion is just the business side of all of this. And yes, I was thinking $1500 for the lot. I wouldn't go more than $2k. Not if you have to put $6k into the motor for a rebuild. ..of course, if you do, then you'll have a motor that you know is good...which adds some value.

Thanks for the help, I think I'm going to try to get it for the $2000 and do a top end rebuilt with rings, the engine actually only has about 60K miles the only known problem is the head stud.
Thanks Fred |
Got it! soon to be in my car

...which car?
|
Core value of 1500 f0r a 3.2?? I will take 20 at that price please! Lets see, I would havea fire sale on the parts just to get rid of them quickly.....
Crank and rods 1000 case 1200 cylinders 300 heads 500 cams 75 cam towers 100 complete injection 700 dme 200 harness 50 etc etc etc No one in their right mind should sell a "core" 3.2 with a broken head stud for 1500!! Cheers |
My guess is it's worth about $2500 to $3500.

I think a good crank and rods is closer to 1500. 3.2 cranks are really hard to come by. A couple of years ago a friend of mine had this same problem with his Carrera and no budget for a rebuild. I replaced the head stud with some good used steel head studs and put it back together for $400 in parts. If all it has wrong with it is a broken head stud, I'd fix it. -Chris |
I know they are expensive, my example was based on "fire sale pricing".
I agree, just fix it! Cheers |
I'm going t fix it and it will go on my yellow car I might go all the way and put fiber glass fenders on the front and back to reduce the weight
