1982 911 SC Blue Smoke on start up after sitting a few hours
I am a new 911 owner. I hope to get involved with this chat. My car has 92K miles and has been recently serviced. I read through the archives and my problem is slightly different from what I was reading.
Anyway, my car after sitting all night starts up and not much smoke comes out at all. Today I drove around (about 30 miles) and came home and parked. About 4 hours later I went out and started it back up. Well, a fairly large puff of blue smoke came out the tail pipe. Almost like a bomb went off but no noises. It started up fine. I read that sometimes letting it sit for 15 secs. before turning it off helps. Do you think this might help? Also do you think it is a valve guide issue or ?. It doesn't smoke any other time. I have checked the oil 3 times today just to make sure and it is right at the halfway point. I am used to some blue smoke on Ferrari boxers/TRs but I haven't seen this much. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't serious. Thanks. |

Welcome!
Just so I understand you correct; your car did not smoke at all before this particular time ? Nor after ?

Check your oil level....do this by warming up the car for a few minutes @ idle and checking the oil while @ idle....chances are the car has been overfilled with oil.....

welcome!
First thing to check is top of heat exchangers, if you have a leaky head gasket, hot oil could be pooling, and in some cases burn off like that, esp since your car was warm when this happened. generally you are more likely to get smoke when the car sits for a while-like a week or more.. but these cars can smoke at random times so i'd just chart your consumption-so long as you are confident that all else is well, see how long it takes to use a quart, then go from there.. |

Thanks guys. I appreciate it. Thanks for the welcoming. I look forward to spending time on this chat and learning about these cars. I have so much fun with this car in my first day of ownership. It is a very useable, driveable car.
I will keep you posted on my progress. I just purchased the car. It didn't smoke this morning in 30 degree weather. I came home and let it sit for a few hours and then started it back up and then came the smoke. It was only for about 2-3 seconds and then gone. I drove around and it didn't smoke at all during the drive. I will check the oil again tomorrow and make sure it is ok. |

Here is a technique that a fellow Pelican told me, and it works.
When you come home from driving, or arrive where you are going, let the engine idle for a little while, say 30 seconds. this allows the oil to get back to the tank, not sitting in your engine. Works for me!! EDIT- Sorry, you have already heard about this, do it, you'll be happy...... -Chris
