Hose that runs over the top of the fan to the exhaust?

Forgive me as I am a new owner and still waiting for my manual. I noticed I have a leak in the metal duct work type hose that runs from the drivers side over the fan down the passengers side a section of the exhaust. Is this a heater hose?
Also since it is leaking I could feel air being blown out from the blower on the top back of the drivers side engine compartment. Will this harm the car in anyway until I can get a new hose? Thanks.
My car is an 82 SC 911.

Hi,twilight, no problems there -its the heater hose from the blower into the heat exchanger. Crappy paper type material.
When mine collapsed I bought some from VW shop, cheap.
same stuff but shorter length, which I joined with a bit of tubing and a couple of jubilee clips. I do intend to remove all that crap and backdate the heater system.eventually.
Do a search on here and become enlightened about anything
on your car!

Thanks. I am glad. I went out and played with the hose a little and the hose started to come apart but in a spiral pattern. It is rather cheap. I will get a new one. So can I remove it and drive the car without it connected safely? Thanks.

I'd change that hose pronto. If stock it has a paper lining. Mine came apart at redline and blew burning embers out my dash vents. I have tried a search for backdating my heating system and found zip. Help?
Also, '82SC. Thanks.

There is lots of information on this topic in the archives. I recently replaced my heater hose with aircraft SCAT tubing. Somewhat over-engineered for the task and more expensive than some other options. One great by-product of the project was the wonderful Aircraft Spruce catalog.

I also have an '82 SC, and bought the car with a busted hose. Bought a replacement from our host (make sure you get the right one) - fit right in, and was a quick, easy fix. I did the other hose (the one that goes down on the left) at the same time.

The trickiest parts:
-getting the hose to pass through the hole to go underneath the car. It was getting stuck on the oil-lines I'd installed for the new chain tensioners. I found it was easier to feed the tube in from underneath the car.
-if you have A/C, I could imagine that getting in the way. In fact, the reason your hose was damaged was likely that someone put the A/C on top of it while they were working on the car. It takes some elbow-grease, but the AC is pretty easy to move without disconnecting the lines.
