Tach issues
I don't think the tach is accurate in my 83SC. The original tach would work at idle and just above up to about 1500rpms then not work again until just above 3000rpms. I got a pristine condition used tach so I jumped on it. The car has a brand new alternator and I never ran teh old tach with the new alternator. Put the new tach in and it works much better than the original one (looks way better too). It has motion through the whole range of the tach but it still jumps around a little at times. Is this normal. It just does seems to operate like other tachs I have been around (on all Jap sports cars I have owned). Plus I am now wondering if it is calibrated correctly. Is 1500-1600rpms at 65 in 5th normal? Is 3000rpms at 60ish in 4th normal? seems very low then again this is my 1st 911 so not too much to base it on. Thanks

What sort of ignition system are you running in your car?

No, that's not normal operation. It shouldn't jump around like that. The rpms are way off as well. You should be running about 1000 rpm higher than that, in fifth gear at 65 mph. Something is not right.
