Overcharging 17.5 VDC
The battery was dead on my 83sc so I bought and installed a new one. The car started up fine but when I checked the the voltage at the battery it was running 17.5 volts. I bought a voltage regulator from our Host, installed it and I'm still getting 17 to 17.8 to the battery. I've cleaned the ground straps and was wondering what the next step would be, rebuild the alternator? Thanks, Craig

It often is not ONLY a bad VR...but the bad VR has brushes that contact the copper bands or "slip rings" on the shaft ogf the alternator. The slip rings are very thin and are prone to "wear through" and show black plastic ( ?) underneath..
These often have to be replaced too when a new VR is installed to complete the job. Wil
