G50 noise

I drove a very nice '89 couple today. There is not much to dislike on these cars is there???

The transmission on this particular car seemed howl when under load, especially 4th and 5th gear. I have never had a 901 or 915 that made this kind of racket! Is this a normal situation with the G50 tranmission? If so, is there a fix?

G50 is known for its rattle, has been talked about here in the past, try a search.

Thanks for the reply Wolf. However this did not sound like a rattle. This was more of a howl. Do you think it may be one and the same?

When you say howl, do you mean as in a whine? Is it all the time or only during accel or deceleration?
On a side note, have you every had any work done at Stuttgart Haus in Mooresville? We visit there a few times a year and it would be nice to know if I can go to them if needed during a trip.

Joe, more like a whine versus a rattle and only under load, so only when accel.

Bill is about the nicest guy in the P-car community you will meet!

Thanks for any help. :D

Sounds like my G50s, both of them.

The G50 is known for a decel rattle not a whine or howl.
Has it ever had a leak? There could be other things such as a bearing or differential but no way to know (that I have ever been told) without a teardown. Maybe someone else can chime in here with more help.
If everything works fine, you may want to start by changing the fluid with a good quality 75-90 synthetic GL-5. There was a recent thread where I gave the rundown on how to. It won't cost that much and its worth a shot before you do a teardown.
