Checking studs w/o draining oil tank?

I need to remove my valve covers and check my head studs. Do I need to drain the oil tank too?

If you jack one side of the car up at a time, you don't have to drain anything (check one side, with the other side on the ground....)

Very true, should have mentioned that, just seems like I am always doing valves and need access to everything at once. Of course that's not necessary either, but that's the way I roll.
