If it's an H4, usually that will be noted on the front of the lens. It could also be an H1 or H5.

Amber headlamp lenses were originally used on French cars. I have no idea where you can get these lenses, nor why you'd want them.

Most people will use a yellow plastic cover or spray tint available at hobby stores in the stained glass section.

I think zeke or someone had a pair up for sale in the classifieds. I don't think pelican sells them, maybe you could give them a call and see if they can get you a pair of the weltmiesters like the ones in the classifieds. If pelican doesn't carry them check out these guys:

Here is the link to the pair that Zeke has for sale:
FS Yellow plastic headlight lenses: H1 or H4

Yellow light actually helps the driver see the road better. The point is, to take all the blue out of view. Many white or blueish white lights make seeing harder. The color blue causes glare in the human eye.

Just try on a pair of yellow "Blue Blocker" sunglasses. You will notice a big difference in your own visability.

i got a pair of h4 lenses off ebay, they were not cheap but they are glass. the reason french cars have them is as BleauBlues states. they are also used in endurance racing so the LMP cars can see that the car behind them is a GT class car at night (the GT cars use the yellow lenses and the LMPs are white).

Haven't seen a yellow h-4, but I know there are yellow h-1 glass available on ebay. You sure you bought an h-4? If it has E1 on the glass it's an H-1 from my memory.... In looking at the factory parts book, I can only find an h-1 lense in yellow. It appears that for the h-4's, France used a yellow bulb cover. Love to see a pic of the h-4 glass lens!

If yellow is better, why don't all cars come with them? And why are they illegal in most states?

steven polask,
Reading your question, I thought you meant "amber" as stock normal light bulb. The yellow color people are talking about is French Yellow headlight. I am not sure if you can get yellow lense but you can definitely paint it. The thing with painting it is that you will have to replaint it again after a year or so. I use to paint lenses (on other cars) with those tranparent paint from hoby shops, easy to take off and repaint compare to normal paint.
In CA, anything you do to your light/lense is illegal. Yellow headlight is definitely illegal. They will give you a Fix It ticket. You will have to get the light back to stock and go to police station to get it check, send the signed paper to DMV and pay $10 or $15 bucks.
