3.2 distributor help

I took the distributor out to get the alternator fan housing strap off and now the dizzy won't go back in. Both the dizzy and engine are at tdc position. All I can figure is that the distributor must have moved. It should still go back in at tdc, right?! What should I do now?

look what I say here---> http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=106220&highlight=Ferch+ AND+walker+AND+dizzy

Remember...you may have match-marked the rotor position as it came out...but at the last moment, it would turn ever-so slightly because of the angled gear cut. You have to account for this movement as you put it back in...as I say in my last post of that thread.

Thanks Wil. That makes total sense since the dizzy gears are angle cut. I just wanted to make sure there was nothing else. Oh yeah, I also replace the rubber o-ring 'cause it was easy to do while the engine it out.

The new O-ring will be a bit bigger in OD than the old unit...and it gave me a momentary scare in that it made pushing the dizzy back "in" kinda hard...how much push is "too much" ( ?) if you don't do 12 of these things a day like a John Walker would ?

Well...a good "uuumph", and popped right in after I was SURE of orientation.

I replaced my o-ring and my dizzy wouldn't go back in. There are two types of o-rings apparently. Mine '89 3.2 requires the "flat" sided whereas Pelican sent me a rounded one and the dizzy would not go back in. I was stumped until I called a mechanic and he told me to use the original style o-ring.

Yep, Pelican sent me a rounded one as well. I remember looking at it and thinking it doesn't look right. Lucky for me I kept the old one.
