915 gearbox got stuck in reverse

My 85 Carrera has gearbox with 40K since its professional rebuild. The other day I put it in reverse and it got stuck there. I was able to move the shifter through the pattern but it made no difference - still in reverse. But it didn't feel like my normal reverse. It seemed like a "4th gear reverse." I know that makes no sense, but use your imagination.

Eventually, I just put it in reverse, revved it to about 2500, and dumped the clutch in frustration - figuring I was going to need some major work anyway and I had to get it out of the busy downtown street it was on. The car stalled. When I started it up, all was back to normal with the gearbox. No problems since...

Any ideas?

Do a search under the term "shift coupler"

You may want to also pull the small cover plate off the bottom of the transmission and check that the guide fork is not loose or worn down. You will need to drain the trans for this.

one of the detents that keeps the shift shafts organized is probably in the wrong place. maybe the guy that rebuilt it will confirm and fix it. common problem. disassembly required.
