Swepco 201 observations and then a mess!!

I decided to replace my gear oil since the trans rebuild 4500 miles ago. Swpeco seems to be highly regarded on the board, so I gave it a try. Put the car level on jackstands, freed up the fill and drain plugs, drained it, and pumped in the Swepco.....it all went so smoothly that I became somewhat concerned. Put it all back together, put my wife in the car and ran some errands. The car definitely shifted smoother. Cruising at 3000 rpm, the gearbox is now much quieter. I couldn't have been more pleased.....but read on. We returned home, but she had some more errands to run, picking out a newborn baby gift for someone and a couple of "girlie" type errands. She gave me a choice of going or not going and I figured, well, the car is warmed up, I had such a simple time with the Swepco, why don't I just stay home and change the engine oil, which I did....drained everything and put the plugs back in. As I'm putting in the second quart, the oil reached the top of the funnel, so I stopped pouring to let it settle. Then I turned to the left to reach for something causing my right elbow to knock into the funnel which in turn deposited a half quart of oil over the entire top of my nicely detailed engine. Three rolls of paper towels later, numerous involuntary oral ramblings that caused neighbors to take their children in the house, four hours of my time, to say nothing of the backache from being in that rear engine compartment position for four hours, my oil change is completed. Sorry.....just had to vent. Thought you guys would get a kick out of that.

Its funny, I used swepco for a while, ran it in my dads car and customers cars. Then one day I had a lengthy discussion with the owner of a tranny shop and he said it was ridiculously overrated and he recommended other oils. I cant remember which off the top of my head but they were from the redline line and he said race trannies on teardown were close to new while those with swepco showed considerable wear. I wont give out the name because the conversation was in confidence but its just another point of view from someone who sees these transmissions on a daily basis.

FWIW after topping up with it my dads car sounded a lot better, shifted better for a while then quickly went back to normal.

Wow. I did my first oil change today on my car. I read through the archives so I only spilled a few drops. I put in 10 qts. so I might have overfilled my 82 SC but I am not sure. I need to drive it and check it again.

I did have a similar experience in a different car(Ferrari 308). The oil filter face straight up and down on this car. Well, I am done with my oil change. I started the car. I noticed my oil pressure didn't rise as fast as normal. Well, I keep the car running. All of a sudden I see a pool of oil coming out from underneath the car. The seal on the oil filter seperated and oil was blowing out the side. It got all over my engine and even down into the clutch. I spent a very long time cleaning it up. The worst part was my engine was spotless. I never got it as good as it was but what can you do. It happens to the best of us.

Porschekid,

dont take this the wrong way... but you know what? Telling half a story is not very fair. If your fellow recommends alternatives, why not share? It is very hard to evaluate a story like yours without all of the details. If Grady (or someone like him) said it, that's one thing but if "igottafastporch" (or whoever) said it, that's something totally different.

I too have spoken with a "highly regarded source" and he tells me that SWEPCO is the way to go for pre-G50 trannies. He explained why but told me if I told anyone else, he would need to kill them....
