cylinder rust removal
now that the crankcase is painted and the heads are done, i didnt realize how bad my cylinders look until i went to reassemble. a wire wheel doesnt work well in getting between the cylinder cooling fins, so i think im going to have to soak them. i did a search for "rust removal", didnt offer much. anyone have a suggestion on what i should soak the cylinders in to clean them up a bit. thanks for your help.

I taped off the base of the cylinder where the height group info is, and the top by the sealing ring and blasted mine. They look great now (i think so at least.) Don't have any pics of before, but here is after.
![]() Keep in mind that these cylinders are cast iron. I assume yours are too.

sounds like a good idea, what blasting media did you use? good idea taping off the bottom, i guess it is pretty crucial not to damage that area since it mates with the case.

Either send them out, bead blast them yourself or run some folded sandpaper between the fins and call it a day. You never see these things after the motor is assembled and in the car. You can coat them with a light coat of oil to keep them from rusting until first time you run the car. After that, it doesn't mater what you did before installing them.
At least that's the way it's been for me on the VW stuff I've done over the years. |

i would agree, it seems silly to clean them since no one will see.

I used coal slag. Cast iron is pretty tough, so you can use a strong abrasive. I blasted mine to rid them of the insulating layer of grim that had accumulated over the years. Anything that helps the engine run cooler seems like a good idea.
