When I was in Stuttgart, I rented a 911 from Avis. It was affordable.

I hope you enjoyed the A-81 while driving up to Bamberg. That 45 min drive is the best in the area for speed...hardly any vehicles.
As you pass by Wurzburg, swing by 1st Infantry Division HQs and I'll by you a coffee. Bavaria911

Gruss Gott!
The Autobahns north of Stuttgart (towards Heidelberg and Frankfurt) have a number of speed limited sections. Heading south or east isn't so bad, but I know that at least on the speed limited section towards Ulm (on the way to Munich) they have cameras to catch speeders. Also, keep a close eye on the signs, some of the sections of Autobahn have speed limits that change with conditions. Near Stuttgart, there are some really nice driving roads towards the south about an hour in the Swabian Alb. You can also check out the castle Hohenzolleren while you're down there. It's the ancesteral base of the German Kaisers ![]() From there, there are some nice roads up the castle of the Catholic branch of the Hohenzollerns in Schloss Sigmaringen ![]() Tschuss!

Blast from my past.. Born in Heidelberg , and Bamberg is neat little town.. do try some of this stuff ( Rauchbier, made by some whacked monks ) 3 or 4 of these and your babbling, Bamberg I served there 80's , 113 Mech. Inf. With Dustoff Europe in the 90's Stuttgart / Nellingen airfield..silly me was a Z freak..your in a great area. Oh, please go and have a Thuringer wurst & bier for me... both become unobtanium once you leave.
Rauchbier= smoked beer / the brewery caught fire in the middle age time frame, smoke & heat wafting thru in the brewery resulted in this stuff..it's scary stuff. Rika Last edited by Rikao4; 03-29-2006 at 06:19 AM.. |

BTW: please don`t say "Tschüss" in Bavaria. Thats what they say in middle and northern Germany and is exactly what they don`t like in Bavaria. Correct would be "pfiá de"...but don`t ask me how this is spoken! Last edited by carrera84; 03-29-2006 at 11:18 AM.. |

Was there this past summer on *special assignment* for 4 mos.... shhh...
- do not run out of gas on the Autobahn. Potential fine. - watch speed limits..I guess the drill is that it's a money fine for up to 1-20 over....points involved, too for > 20 over...and pulling a license for 40+ over....people from Germany please correct this if necessary. - do NOT ( EVER ! ) pass on the right !!! Always pass on the left or keep on the guys tail until he wakes up and moves over...but NEVER pass on the right. - be careful making passes.....you ( yourself) might be in the middle of yet another pass ( a "double" pass)....that can get quite dicey. - in the city....pedestrians have the right of way. Surprise...not only when they put their foot onto the roadway...but even if they're 3-4 feet away from the curb ( on the sidewalk)...and *appear* to be heading for a street crossing. You ( driver) *better* stop your car and let the pedestrian make his crossing...... Wil

I spent about 13 months in Bamberg. I thought that Switzerland had more fun driving...more twisty roads. Driving fast in a straight line loses its appeal after awhile. There were also less trucks to worry about in Europe away from major cities. Trucks also were not as long or as hard to see around.
I say try the Autobahn for a couple of hours then try the backroads of Bavaria and look at the small towns. Big cities are a problem with no parking and difficult driving. Bamberg was a nice town when I was there 1977 but it must be different now. Drive carefully there is much more than driving to see and do. |

Have fun. If it's is a car you don't know or a rental car make sure to check your tire pressure first. It's not too much fun to blow a tire at 150 mph. And at this time of the year rental cars might be equipped with winter/snow tires with speed limit (ca. 125 mph or even less). Ask for summer tires if you want to go real fast.

One more thing, check your mirrors , Flash means get over NOW, not like we drive around here, or after the next exit, or I'm doing the limit, I'm right crap.
Or you may find that your NOT up to driving there at all. Friend working for Rental outfit in Frankfurt tells me he is often sent to retrieve Americans 'who can't handle it' Ausfahrt is one big town Rika |

Banned but not out, yet..

"Ausfart is one big town" <- Too funny. It always seems to be right next to "Eingang".
P.S. Always hit the bathroom before driving the autobahn. You never know when you will get stuck in one of their famous multihour delays (with no exits for miles) due to an accident. Last time I was there, after the first hour, people were leaving their cars (or autobus) and heading for the bushes. It was rather amusing until grandma left the bus...

There is a neat little place outside of Stuttgart called Glemseck. A place where the bikers hang out on Sunday mornings - but it used to be a race track that is now public roads. If you can find a time when it is not packed with traffic it would make a nice diversion

If my memory is correct, the Solitude race track of the '60's is just the smaller triangle in the lower left of that map.
