Dropping Motor. What else should I do while it's out
 

Hey guys,

In the next few weeks I plan on dropping my motor for the first time to have the transmission refreshed. Here is what I also plan on doing while it's out. Any other suggestions?

1. Replace engine sound pad
2. Remove and clean fuel injectors
3. Replace vacuum lines
4. Replace rear (and front) shocks
5. Replace motor mounts

Wayne's 101 projects book has a nice list.

Detail the engine compartment to make it gleam.
Straighten those AC fins.
Repaint the engine compartment.
Powdercoat the engine tin.
Rebuild engine.
New paper hoses?

Airbox cover has been repainted with epoxy appliance paint and stickers from Porsche since this picture for more gleam! Dirt and dust just tumble off the surfaces.

Thoroughly clean the engine bay and detail the engine. It's so nice when they're clean and the only time you can really do it is when the engine is out.

Also:

1. Convert to twin plug
2. Upgrade to wacky cams
3. Add ITB's
4. Mahle 3.4 HC P&C's

Valve adjustment, very easy with the engine out.

Detail engine compartment / motor.

Have the tins powder coated.

etc, etc, all depends on how much you want to do & how long you plan to have the motor out. Also, make sure you get all the old foam and as much adhesive off before you install the new engine pad.

Oh yea, polish and clearcoat the fan. Powdercoat the fan housing.

Take a picture of you inside the engine bay

Remove and document all plated hardware and have it replated ...CAD or yellow dye chromate.

Replace speed & reference sensors on the flywheel.

In addition to the 30K service stuff (plugs valve adjustment, etc) be sure to replace and re-torque the intake manifold gaskets (a snap with the engine out...)

Replace common oil leak seals.

Replace rear shocks.

Accelerator bushings, shifter bushings, oil sensor, thermostat o-ring, cv-joints

I did the above+ when I dropped my engine to replace with a newer tranny.

I'm just finishing up the very same project. I spent a ton of time on just cleaning dirt and grime off the engine/trans and bay area. A quick steam cleaning would have been ideal before doing anything else.
Other things I did: clutch, pilot bearing and rear seal, repacked cv's, rear shocks, cam oil lines, chain cover gaskets, op switch, replaced various seals and gaskets, and detailed/painted parts. I decided against expandable oil return tubes because they didn't look adequate enough. They would have been easy to do while the ugly and heavy exhaust is out but...

One more vote for replacing oil seals. Particularly for the pressure and temp sensors.

-valve adjustment
- replace hard-to-reach top of engine oil seals ( thermostat, various senders)
- maybe even the fuel lines if this is a 3.2...as it seems to be.

oil tank stuff...

& if it's a 72 or earlier, swap the bolts around on the banana arms

good time to put in the Al arms if you don't have them - you will actually have room to torque the bolts w/engine out.

I'm about to reinstall my engine this weekend. It's been out for 5 or 6 months. I only get to work on it on saturdays, and trust me, you'll keep finding things. I placed another order for parts and would think surely, there can be nothing else. Then I got sick, ugh, then I'm trying to help plan a wedding too. I replaced my cold start valve and intake runner sleeves (CIS), breather hose and housing seal, oil pressure switch, clutch & goodies, flywheel seal, throw out arm, oil cooler seals, sandblasted and repainted engine tin, cleaned engine up a bit, cleaned & repacked cv joints and replaced boots, and seals, new throttle linkage bushings, replaced the soundpad, oil temp sensor, tank to airbox hose, and I'm sure I left some things out. Make sure you put some gas stablizer in it as well if it turns into a multi-month project as mine did. I'm ready to drive it again. Good luck. It's a great experience.
