Help Please ! - rear window install
I hope somebody can help out here. I'm trying to install the rear window on my 82SC, and the window rubber just won't fit properly. I'm onto my second new rubber (thought the first one wasn't right so I got another one), and I cannot get the rubber seal to fit right on the window. It seems to have a problem fitting correctly around the corners of the window such that the seal lip which lies over the surface of the glass kinks up over in the corners and won't lie flat (it's a bit like if you try to bend a flat peice of rubber around a corner - you get it kinking in the corner). I thought the bezel might flatten it out or hold it down, but the bezel just won't go in either.

Unfortunately, my camera is out of action, so I've used somebody elses picture and tried to show what is happening. The inside edge of seal literally buckles up, like it is too fat to go round the screen corner and even though the bezel isn't in place, I cannot see it lying down against the screen.

I've had a similar issue with repro VW window seals.
First off, make sure you're doing this in a warm environment, ie heated garage. Use a popsicle stick lubed with disk soap to flip the outer lip back up. If necessary, use a hairdryer to warm the rubber and push it (gently!) down.

you will find a little violence is in order,,try shoving the glass back and forth to relax the seal, /pull on the seal, if all else fails...redo with a little soap and water to get all onto place......as a final thought in my stupidity i have even tried to install the glass using the wrong groove !! (there is a lot going on with that seal)

I just did this two days ago. You need to make sure it's in the correct groove. There are two grooves on the inside of the seal. The correct groove is the most "outside" one. Does that make sense? I had put it in the inner-most groove and it bunched up also.
Once I had it on correctly, it took another half-hour and fit perfectly. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies so far, I'll take solace in the fact that I'm not the only one who has had this problem.
What about porsche OEM seals, do they do this aswell. Should I dump the repro seals and go genuine, or am I just wasting money Thanks David |

FWIW, I'm replacing the windshield, windshield gasket and rear window gasket in my 82 SC while it's in the paint shop.
The glass company doing the work (who's knowledge and quality standards I personally know are quite high) strongly recommends using only the Genuine Porsche gaskets. Says the aftermarket gaskets are too often problematic.

It has been said repeatedly, that only the OEM Porsche seals will reliably fit, without the problem you're experiencing. If you're using an after-market seal, I would guess that's the problem.

I would guess the problem - the window and seal have no respect for you yet.....but they will!! I have tried the rope pull from top and bottom, in the end bottom makes more sense as gravity is on your side .As you go around with the pull dont be scared to stop and look see if all is centered (more violence ) I know the pull is not your problem butt center could be

Hi noticed your in the UK where did you get your seal from? I have had lots of trouble trying to find a decent seal in the UK for the rear window and have so far tried 3 the 3rd been the best fit is still crap! There is a guy on e-bay from down south somewhere that is supposed to do OE seal and has a good reputation his id name slips my memory at the minute but I will try to remember for you. I keep meaning to give him a try but so many jobs on the list at the minute.

Hi Steve, when I was still in the UK I used type-911.co.uk a lot (still do) - they are really good. Another good place to try is www.forestfine.com. They normally have all the hard to get OEM stuff in the UK.

The last seal I got was from Type-911 and although the best fit so far is still not brilliant. www.forestfine.com is the guy I was talking about from e-bay rob shapscott I think, I so far havent used him but he comes recommended by some of the early restorers so think I will give him a try when I get back round to it.

The first seal came from Parts Source, and second one is from Specialist Cars of Malton. Specialist were pretty good in as much as they said they would take the seal back if it wasn't good enough. Both seals were around about the £35.00 mark.
I'm going to get the proper porsche seal, then at least I know that the seal is right. It sounds like these aftermarket seals are bit hit and miss. David |
