Vacuum line safe for fuel? (MFI cold start)

I call PP to buy some fuel line for the cold start system on my 69E with MFI and the sales person said to use regular vacuum line. This is for the line which connects the cold start solenoid to the air filter housing.
Is this safe?

I've always been tought that you can only use approved synthetic rubber hoses in a fuel system. They are specifically made to resist breaking down while carrying fuel. Vacuum hose is NOT made to these specifications and thus should never be used as fuel hose.

No, vacuum is not made for fuel. You need fuel line for that.

I believe what Pelican carries is rated for fuel. They get braided stuff that looks good. Sometimes it can say BMW on it, which I didn't care for and they replaced it. But, the replacement was grey in color, not the black that came off the car.

Anyway, I don't see why they would carry two different types since the fuel line is stout and won't collapse under vacuum.

Talk to another salesperson. Try Glenn @ x240 unless that is whom you talked to in the first place.

routine fuel hose has braiding internally.

I don't know what diameter you need but 1/4" gas line is available from lawn mower repair shops and very rarely at auto supply shops.

I used vacuum line on my MFI cold start circuit. It's not a suitable long term solution. The lines got hard and I suspect if you use them for more than a few months they would leak or contaminate the injectors. Mine was generic vacuum line from Autozone.

This is a common VW, Porsche … German hose. It is 4.5 x 9.5 mm Porsche part number 999.180.120.50 sold by the meter. I would think Pelican Parts has it.

Be sure and use the Norma Schellen hose clamps 999.512.082.02. Common worm clamps can damage the fuel hose and cause a gasoline leak.

I agree, never use vacuum line.

Best,
Grady

The "vacuum line" Pelican sells is the externally braided German stuff. It is the same as what came on the 911's originally. It is rated for CIS fuel service. I have used it for CIS fuel service for five years without incident. Jim

The below image shows a CIS system "re-hosed" with the Pelican braided vacuum/fuel line. Some of the lines contain hot CIS pressure gasoline and some carry "vacuum". The correct clamps were used where available.
