The March edition of 911 & Porsche World featured an article about two Dutch brothers who run a Porsche parts salvage business. They have been recycling parts and dismantling cars for nearly 20 years. They see lots of wrecked cars and state that all of the cars from the Boxter era forward are not as well built, having thinner steel and weaker welds. More damaging is their assessment of water-cooled engines and transmissions. Engines and transmissions are often only lasting 5,00 to 10,000 kilometers under Autobahn conditions. They know this because the demand for these parts from wrecks cars is huge.
"I can buy 50 gearboxes for 996's tonight and, in a couple of months they will be sold. All of the bearings in the 996 gearboxes are poor." Perhaps we don't see this in the US because we don't drive fast enough, but the brothers simply disdain the newer cars. |

There may be a little inflating of the details there.
The mileage statement is well under the warranty limits. So why would you go to a salvage person when the dealer should be responsible? Of course the metals are thinner. That is mostly because of improvement in materials and manufacturing processes. Yes, The older p-cars are true workhorses but don't slam the door on the new ones. My wife couldn't be happier with hers ( turbo S cab ) and she does push it much harder than I would ever push my 930. Q.
