Fuel coming out the exhaust

After several attempts at getting my 2.7 w/CIS to turn over this spring - without any luck. I now have fuel coming out the exhaust pipe. Not just a little, but quite a bit came shot out. Any ideas as to where it's coming from and why?

Define your terms.

Turn over: engine is able to spin using the starter.

Fire or run: combustion occurs and engine runs or turns on it's own without starter.

Fuel is coming from the injectors; why they are leaking is another issue. Does the air meter plate under the air filter move freely? If the engine will not turn over it may be "hydrolocked" - one or more combustion chamber completely full of fuel.

I had the same problem this spring. Turned over rapidly, making me think the battery was fine. Wrong. Not enough spark. Ultimately had raw gas dripping out near the cat. Replaced with an Optima, cleaned up the plugs and now starts in three turns every time.

Make sure you change your oil once you figure out what's wrong. That much gas coming out will wash down the cylinders and contaminate the oil.

Keep an extinguisher and a water hose handy.
Are you saying that you hear the solenoid/starter engaging but it will not crank the engine?
It sounds like hydro-lock.
Take the plugs out.
Disconnect the 3-pin CDI module to prevent ignition.
Now crank the engine to clear out the fuel from the cylinders.
Clean the plugs and reinstall. Make sure you use the right wires for the correct firing order.
Reconnect the module. Use a little Dielectric grease, or Vaseline on the pins.
If your battery is good, it should fire now.
The underlying problem may be a leaking injector and/or CSV.
Use 2 cans of Injection cleaner on a full tank (80 liters) and drive it hard.
Let us know what you find.

Met with my mechanic (yeah I gave up). He doesn't think it's hydro lock as the engine turns over and sound like it wants to fire. Spark/battery looks OK. He's thinking a leaking injector or the diaphram thingy (my words not his) in the air box may be shot. I dropped off a spare CIS setup I had so he going to scavenge parts off that & try to get'er going.

Sounds like your car has the afterburner mod. There'll be NO beating you off the line!!!

Good luck with the fix.

This is what happens when you FLOOD the motor excessively. I am guessing that you tried to start it for a fair while, right? While it is turning over your CIS is injecting fuel into the cylinders and as the exhuast valve opens and closes, it drains into your exhaust.

Update - drained the fuel from the exhaust, changed the oil, did a few other minor spring tweaks & she's back on the road! Thanks for all the replies and advice.
