The mirror housing is chrome and round and flat. The chrome rectangular flag mirrors started in 1972.

Here's a 71S from the owner's gallery.

And available in the catalog here:

Yes, most 71s should have the large chrome round mirror.

However, my 71T targa was one of the last 100 71s built according to the VIN and late Sept build date. It came with a rectangular mirror ala 72 model year.

That's good to know. Just this morning I saw a 71 on Craigslist and it had the rectangular mirror. I assumed it was replaced for better visability or after accident damage, but it might have been simply a late VIN for 71.

The round ones are Durant mirrors. These were also available for the right side also as an option. May have been standard on S. Right side mirror looks good but is useless.

And don't buy repros for the Durant. The real Durant is NLA, AFAIK. But the repops are junk. Ask me how I know. That's why I ended up with a Talbot (repro) from Aardvark.

A real nice Durant is the best for actually seeing behind the car, IMHO. They wiil work on the pass side if you move them back to just outside the vent window.

There are a lot of late 71's with the rectangular mirror. I have one.

If you decide on the Durant I'll be glad to take the rectangular one off of you.
