What's the secret?

I must be doing something wrong. I just took my son to school in a blinding Southern California rainstorm, and I just cant figure out the "defroster" .

I cranked the knob (between the seats) all the way to the right on the heater. Then put the lower lever on the dash to the right.

Within 2 minutes you could roast a chicken in the car, the front window was clear but the side windows weren't. Besides driving a different car, an I doing something wrong? Thanks, in advance! (The car is a 88 Carrera)

Either run the A/C for a while or crack the side windows at it will help to circulate the dryer, warmer air and clear up the windows. I'm sure there are some other recommendations but this works for me.

Ashley, do you also pull up the red levers located next to your climate control? I do this, and while the side windows do take longer to defrost, they get there.......just tested this in two days of raining madness

Hope that helps.

The 911 defroster is designed to take moist air from the engine compartment at the back of the car, heat it and then deposit it on the inside of a cold windshield to produce - you guessed it - fog.

Somebody needs to find a way to direct dry AC air onto the windshield.
The 944's have a great system that allows air conditioned (dry) air to be heated and directed at the windshield for a great defogging effect.

Isn't there a famous film of a racedriver piloting a 911 wiping the window with a rag at speed on account of the fogged windshield?

I carry a lint free rag and wipe for safety's sake if I get caught.

I'd like to know, too. I've removed the A/C from my 930, so I don't have the luxury of dry air to aid in defogging. Is there some sort of chemical that can be sprayed on the inside glass...sort of like a RainX only used on the interior?

They have "anti-fog" coating from the same company as Rain-X. Don't know how well it works.

Chris, unfortunately I don't have the 2 red levers, I just have the dial. I think its a thermostat control.

You know it wouldn't be all that hard to plumb the A/C into the defrost vents. You would need to add fittings after the fresh blower and before each of the control boxes. That would even allow you to direct the a/c up or down.

The anti-fog stuff is Fog-X, and it works. You just wipe it on the inside with a clean cloth, same as Rain-X. That and a blast of AC should do it.

I never had a problem with the defogger. One thing to remember is that you need to gradually increase the temp. If you go full blast from the start you'll actually fog them up more. Start with cool air and gradually apply more heat.

Try using Rain-X on the inside of the windshield and the outside

Wait...........so you're saying push the red lever on the dash all the way to the right, then put the dial between the seats at 1 or 2 to start with then work your way up? So, why does it have the defrost logo on the highest temp setting?

P.S. I think I'll try it. Sounds easier than plumbing my A/C

You mean use Fog-X on the inside right? I accidently put Rain-X on the inside years ago and I forget exactly what happened but I made sure I never did it again.

Ashley,

I think that's because to actually eliminate frost you would probably need heat. What you need is to defog, or clear away condensation. Putting more hot air on a cold windshield just adds to the fogging.

If that's the case, your heater "flapper box" is a good candidate for the problem's cause. See this tech article for the details of what the problem is and how to fix it.

Paul, thank you. I tried it this afternoon with the temperature setting low, and it worked. I never took the word "Defrost" in the literal sense.

Ashley.
