Need help identifying problem part.
Hi folks, been a while since I've been here. Moved my family after Katrina and we're finally getting settled in here in north Atlanta. I'm finally getting some time to tinker with my car.
I was planning on bringing the car to a carshow this weekend and detailed her up in preperation. I was rewarded for my efforts by hearing a loud grinding clunking sound from the engine compartment. I've isolated the noise to the component shown in the photos below. I've searched both of Wayne's books and see nothing on the component in question. It's sounds as though the bearing inside the housing is torn up and whatever is spinning inside is bouncing around. Not good. I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to tell me what it is, any info related to removing it (anything considerations to take, special tools etc.) and what would cause the part to fail in the first place. The part looks rather new compared to the rest of the engine and I'm thinking it was recently replaced so something may have caused premature failure of the bearing. So, I'd like to replace this part as well as others that may have contributed to the problem. Thanks in advance. Here's the pics. http://home.alltel.net/thunderpunk/part1.jpg http://home.alltel.net/thunderpunk/part2.jpg |

noise
it is your air pump on your 930..its the first thing you get rid of if you hot rod the car ..cutting off the belt will cause you no problems until you decide if you really need it..i probably have used one for $100.00 + shipping

What does this pump do? That way I can decide if I will need it or not. |
air pump
emission device ..pumps air into exhaust system to reduce emissions ..necessary for visual tests in some states for inspection..removed for any performance modification

was thinking air pump..just needed year and model. it's pollution control equipment.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to try and remove it without cutting the belt. What recommendations do you guys have for dealing with all of the vacuum lines and other plumbing connected to this thing? Should I plug the lines or remove them entirely? I'm a newb but have pretty good mechanical skills as far as turning wrenches goes.
There are no emissions testing here where I live but I'd like to keep the parts in case that ever changes. Thanks. |
pump
its a pain in the ass to remove and you willl have to remove the scavange pump from the front of the drivers side camshaft to remove belt without cutting it.......cut the belt ..quick end to problem..you can always replace pump and belt at a later date

Will do, thanks a bunch guys.

Welp, that fixed the noise problem. Happy Happy Happy. Thanks guys
