LM-1, LC-1 and LMA-2 Oh My!
I am getting started on the installation of the Innovate Motorsports hardware I've acquired on my 1970 911 S (with MFI).
I am following John Cramer's great write-up on installation of the LM- in an early 911 with MFI. I just got my muffler back from the welder with 2 new bungs welded on the input pipes. They came out fine. Now, my plan is to run 2 O2 sensors so I can collect data on the left & right banks simultaneously, along with RPM. The equipment I need for this (after contacting the great customer service at Innovate Motorsports) include: LM-1 - the basic digital Air/Fuel Ratio (Lambda) meter that controls a single sensor LC-1 - the digital Air/Fuel Ratio (Lambda) sensor controller that controls the 2nd sensor LMA-2 - the RPM convertor that integrates with the LM-1 and also provides 4 additional AUX inputs, one of which will be the LC-1. With me so far?! I will be taking photos of this process and posting here so others can learn from my experience. So, I have figured out how all of this hardware needs to be hooked up and approximately where it needs to "live" in my engine compartment, but there are cables EVERYWHERE! Here is a photo of the layout: ![]() The basic connection goes like this: I have the inductive clamp for the RPM convertor. Works just like a timing light. This has a 5' chord that plugs in to the RPM convertor. The RPM convertor has a 5' cord that plugs in to the LM-1 serial port. The LM-1 presumably should be located somewhere in the cab. I was hoping to mount it somewhere under the dash where I can retrieve it easily (but I am open to suggestion on locating it). The cable from the RPM convertor, being only 5 feet long, does not really give me a lot of options to place the LM-1, although I can get a few extra feet because of the 5' length of the inductive clamp cable if I put the RPM convertor inside the cab. The LC-1 will connect to one of the AUX inputs on the RPM convertor with one of its 2 analog output wires (yellow - analog out #1 or brown - analog out #2). I will use analog out #1 (yellow). The LC-1 has 3 wiring harness (each 5' long). A skinny Serial IN a skinny Serial OUT and a fat bundle with the analog wires, power, ground, etc. You can see the yellow analog out wire from this bundle connected to AUX terminal 2 of the RPM convertor. I don't think I need the Serial IN and Serial OUT cables since I am logging to the LM-1. The RPM convertor connects to the serial port on the LM-1. Ok, so there it is all laid out on the floor. Now I need to get all of this stuff in to my car! That is where I am struggling. There are a few little details I've left put, like an optional calibration momentary push button and LED. There are also power and ground requirements for the LM-1 and LC-1 and these need to be switched so they turn off the devices when the car is off. I am doing a permanent install (but non-destructive). All of these cables have to go somewhere and kept out of the way and not dangling everywhere! And most importantly, where to put the LM-1 so I can reach it to take inside and pull off the data. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears! Cheers, Michael
