Pelican's High Torque Starter....

I recently purchased the high torque starter that Pelican sells and it does not seem to fit. I have a 3.2 with an '86 915 trans. Stupid me, I just noticed that the high torque starter is only indicated on the '69-'73 cars but I am wondering if it can be made to fit the later transmissions. Any ideas?

I just put one on a 76 915 and it works fine (great actually). What exactly doesn't fit?
Also, the Pelican catalog shows that the high torque starter fits 74-89.

Just looked at your link in the Pelican catalog and you were looking under the "65-73" section. That said, the part numbers for the high torque starter are identical between the 65-73 and the 74-89.

I put one on an 85 and an 86 without a problem. Like JP911 said, what doesn't fit?

The gear on the high torque starter does not go far enough into the bell housing to contact the ring gear.

I noticed that the gear on the starter can be pulled out quite a ways...does this extend when the starter is engaged and retract when it is not engaged?

Exactly what it does.

If you already have the other one off, bolt it up and give it a spin I bet it will work fine.

I thought I had this problem too, we fiddled and fiddled with it trying to get it to line up.

Then we realized that the mounting bolt flange will detach and rotate, so we moved it to where it would fit.

Worked much better after that.

Great!!! Hopefully that solves this problem... I will give it a try on Saturday and hopefully try to turn it over on Sunday.

Love the hi torque in my car. (5 years now) When I originally put it in I did have to pull about an inch more of battery cable into the rear of the car.

That took about an hour of looking under the dash to be sure it was safe to pull on the cable, and then a couple minutes of brute force to get it to move.
