how do you remove a split tranny plug
 

just when my diy seemed to being going alright, ss brake lines, super blue fluid,new pads, oil/filter,air filter, i get to draining the tranny fluid and run into this...

i'm moving on to the plugs/cap/rotor, valve adj & turbo tie rods as i'm guessing this may need professional help

STOP. Make sure you can get the fill plug out before you do anything else to the drain plug. Also do a search on this site; this is a common problem.

That actually looks better than mine did. I don't know why people feel they need to muscle these things on and off. I threw up my arms in disgust and brought it to a Porsche tech. He drilled it out followed by several flushes and some swepco.

here's my last effort, still stuck on the easyout. i cut the pointed end off the tool so the end is beefier, and so it doesn't stick into the trans.

Can't tell from the pic, but I got my fill plug out, with sits proud of the case by about 1/4" with a clench wrench. One fixed jaw, one movable, sort of like a pipe wrench but thinner, the harder you pull, the more it bites, available from Sears. If you use an easy out, use the largest one you can get in there.

Careful application of heat does wonders.

I welded an old socket to my plug to remove it.

Mine was pretty stuck as well. Drilling and or welding are a bit extreme methods which could damage the transmission case. Be patient with it. Try the following...

Dowse it with WD-40 and let it soak. Spray it every 10 minutes for an hour. Slip your allen wrench into the plug then slip a two foot piece of gas pipe over the handle of the allen wrench. Lightly and repetedly tap the end of the pipe with a hammer to loosen the plug.

This worked for me. Once you get it out, then replace it with a new plug. But as Jim said, do the filler plug on the side of the case first.

If you have not changed the tranny oil yet, know that it is common and normal to have some metal fuzz on the top of your magnetic plugs when they come out.

If WD40 works good, wouldn't something like PB Blaster or Kroil work better?

PB Blaster is like "God's will" in a can compared to WD40. By all means, try the orange goo!

WD-40 is useless for this..... ( WD= "Water Displacing")... use it inside dizzy caps and such.... for what it was intended.

Yep...Kroil, PB blaster, or Wurth Rost Off ! ...the only 3 things I've found to work...

sounds like you finally got it. went thru a real period of depression yesterday when my fill plug wouldnt budge! finally used cheater bar on ratchet on vehicle lift, that didnt work! then used IRand impact and removed it. air tools in the hands of idiot mechanics can and will screw up your week! man am i glad i didnt try this at home!!!! your title for your thread should be "when easy jobs go bad.............real bad!" but i was rewarded for my efforts as fluid appeared fairly clean and just a hair of fuzz on mag drain plug...................YIPPIE! new mobil one injected into it and she shifts just FINE! while there took mega powerful mongo size industrial heated pressure washer to underneath........................3 1/2 hours later covered in cosmoline particles and grease, she looks beautiful....................i looked like a very wet and greasy cat! would say that combo of wd-40 and restaurant degreaser(safe for stainless, alum etc) biodegradible soap helped alot. still some nooks and crannies that need to be addressed, but you can eat of of it for the most part.............well 98%! next on list.............finish degreasing...........more likely "hey son ill give ya $20 bucks if you would do me a favor!" LOL!

A dab of never-seeze on the threads of the replacement plugs can't hurt...

will do that on next oil change .........and yes we torqued them to book spec. whomever did it last time thought both of them were lugnuts on a one ton truck!!!!!!! took car and g/friend to payson for lunch and shifted even better after 100 miles on new fluid.........i am a believer in mobil one synthetics! thanks for the tip.
