Handbrake Binding Problems
 

Evening all (those in the UK),

I decided to beat the elements today and got my 1989 3.2 out for a spin. Actually I was going to the body shop for a spot of touching up !!

As I reversed from its point of slumber I felt the brakes judder free, but then after a couple of miles I noticed the wheels were not spinning freely. The brakes were not bound on you understand, just not fully released.

I stopped and checked to find a very hot rear brake drum and a bit of smoke rising !!! Alarmed I waited a while and trotted home.

A few tips on releasing and sorting rear brakes would be appreciated for a novice !

On a rather more mundane update, this months work includes a front end respray and rear engine lid spray (to replace the crap spray job done by previous owners). Also having the doors and mirrors blown over. New carpets have been ordered with new overmats, as well as a re-trim for the Linen G50 gear knob.

A service and check over at a local specialist will complete the preparations for another season. I am also looking to purchase what it referred to as a "perambulator garage". Basically it is a framed tent that goes over the car, like a cover but it does not touch the car. Anyone had one to comment on ?

The parking brake is just a drum brake kit located inside the rear rotors. 9 out of 10, your cables running from the hand brake to the wheels have become sticky. Really, the only PITA remedy is to pull them out and lubricate liberally, then reinstall. My advice would be not to set the parking brake if you're storing the car for an extended period, or at least get out and work them every now and again. I have purchased new cables, but found fitment problems. If the plastic coating on the cables is not damaged, then removing them and relubricating is the best bet.

Have not had experience with the 'peramubalulator garage' that you refer to, but if it gets the car out of the snow\rain, it can't be a bad thing. Just know that some problems will happen because of temperature fluctuations, and a 'tent' will not solve that unless it is heated. HTH,
