Size does matter. (my SC to Carrera brake upgrade)

I really had no heat issues on the track but as always its better to be safe rather than sorry, epsecially considering the car is lighter, faster, better, and stronger than it was a year ago. SC brakes are almost exactly the same as Carrera brakes, with the execption of a difference of 4mm in rotor thickness. This may not sound like very much but in the world of heat transfer, 4mm makes quite the difference.

And so it begins.

First things first, the Carrera brakes I had bought were a little out of shape so I took some hight temp POR-15 and treated them to a nice little bath and face lift.

*A good tip for paint your own calipers is to cut up some caps from your trusty PB Blaster cans and use them to cover the bores of the capliers to prevent paint from getting into them during the process.

Next, it was time to call in some back up. I enlisted the help of my father, a simliar Porsche junkie like myself, and we got down to business. We removed the old SC junk and got everything ready for the shinny new parts. This was no sweat figuring everything had been off the car a couple months earlier when him and I rebuilt most of the car's suspension componets. Once we got the rotor's off it was very clear how much of a difference 4mm makes, the Carrera dwarfed the tiny SC rotor.

My Padre...

We got everything together and it was nice and preatty, and then the moment of truth, the brake bleed! Suprisingly, this went off without a hitch, we just the old fashioned maunal method with the help of some Super Racing Blue and my sweet home made fluid cather. Then finally, off the jackstands the car came and it was time to see if I knew what I was doing or if I should stick to my day job. It turns out everything went just as planned and the brakes feel amazing, im truely happy.

A special thanks to my father for lending a hand and having some good fun doing it. Enjoy the pic's guys.

Got Vitamin water?

Nice job!

Gee. That front caliper pad hardware kit and the Kumho tires look familiar...........:D

Caliper paint turned out pretty good. The color looks like the color used on the early Boxster calipers. Good choice.

So are you ready to rock or what? Most everybody in the local group has tweaked a thing here or there on their cars over the winter. Should be a good season of track days!

Don't forget to bed-in those rotors & pads. Just picka spot where it's safe and Mr. LawMan doesn't hassle you!!!

Poke a small vent hole in the cap of your Vitamin bleeder bottle. If the hose fits too tight, the bottle is nicely sealed and starts to bloat from the fluid flow, plus the heat of the fluid.

Yup, the rotor instructions say no hard braking for 200km. I figure I would give them a bit and then bed everything in, or do you think it matters?

There is one, oddly its probably the only part covered up by the hose.

Very nice work Matt! I'm looking forward to seeing your car on the track this year with all the suspension upgrades so I know what to do to mine over the winter! :)

PorscheGuy79 04-07-2006 08:37 PM

Silly me I forgot the obligatory Jack style pic!

You look like you have a cross between a smirk and severe discomfort on your face! Now that your car is done you've got to work on properly expressing the cool, collected, calm, and confident expression that Jack somehow manages to work into each of his!

PG79,

What valance are you running? Looks like a nice intermediate air dam with brake ducts. Why is sort of valance is it?

Good looking car!

Mike

So you fixed a problem that you didn't even have?

I think that you have a case of "upgrade"itus.

Well, ya know, he had to validate that Carrera stripe in some way. :D

Did you also add Carrera rears? If so you will want to install a 33bar Carrera or adjustable p/v on the rear circuit.

Bill, I did do the rears. Can you talk to me about what that is?

You should consider blue graphics and wheel centers. I love the white blue combo. Nice car. Is it just a swap the rotors and calipers job?

I actually had some Pelicans do a photoshop of the blue combo and it was very nice. Im just sold on the black on white look.

anthony 04-08-2006 07:45 AM

What is involved with the SC to Carrera brake upgrade? Is it just a matter of swapping calipers and rotors? I've been thinking about this since I had a set of front Carrera calipers.

Its funny cause I was thinking about it and well...

the wheels should look familar to Souk...

the calipers should look familar to Mark...

the steering wheel and lug nuts whould be something Mike would remember...

Its funny how much of the car has come from close friends, haha.

When he eventually borrows (and then will want) a set of Pop's R compound tires, he would have ended up doing the brake swap anyway. :D Some guys using stock brakes, PF97 pads and R compound tires in our local group are cooking their dust boots (and some piston seals) by season's end, if not sooner. A bit more thermal capacity certainly won't hurt- especially when it's an easy swap like this one.

Here's what you need Matt

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1144510690.jpg

It's the the 33 bar pressure limiting valve that goes in-line of the rear brake circuit feed line coming from the master cylinder.

It goes here

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1144510780.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1144510803.jpg

I don't know how the SC original rear circuit feed line is put together. But on my Carrera, the p/l valve is spliced into the rear circuit with a female-female M10 x 1.0 union. You can see the union in the last picture between the two tube nuts, underneath the metal tabs.

If your rear feed line is whole, you'll have to either cut and flare your existing line to insert the union and p/l valve, or buy the two Carrera hard lines to simply put the union, valve and lines together like Porsche did on the Carreras.

PorscheGuy79 04-08-2006 08:12 AM

Kevin, I understand now the item and how it works but im not sure I grasp the latter of the two installation options. Are you going to the RAM dinner next week? Maybe we can talk about it there.

(BTW those backing plates worked out nicely!)
