in-dash AM/FM/CD receiver upgrade-iPod

I'm looking at taking a cheap Blaupunkt out of the dash on my 84 and replacing it with a AM/FM/CD player with one or two AUX inputs (iPod/satellite radio).

Anyone have any experience with the Blaupunkts now being offered? Looking at a Seattle MP74, Monterrey MP35, maybe a Bermuda MP35 with the Blaupunkt iPod adapter. Or any other suggestions for a headunit in the $150-$300 range.

Okay...spirited drive, the only music is the engine. But sometimes a guy's just gotta commute to work or pay attention to "she who must be obeyed"!

Alpine 9820-XM is the only way to go. Built-in XM tuner and Aux inputs for the Ipod. No extra tuner needed for the XM.

better yet, the Alpine 9857! Crutchfield has 'em, you can control the iPod from the head unit, only takes a cable (no adapter box), and the cable is free right now! Alpine website has info on the freebe special.

Actually, the 9820 controls an Ipod, and has a built-in XM tuner. The 9857 requires an additional XM tuner.

Just one bump...

Looked at Alpines...they have two different iPod adapters that work with the different models...one's $$, the other an inexpensive dable.

Anyone have suggestions for other models?

Check out the PIONEER PREMIER DEH-P580MP, or one of the new premier products. Have to buy the sat box buy handles ipod.

I like the higher end Sony units, sorry don't know the exact #. Will do Ipod and XM (with separate box) and plays MP3. Has a black face with no external controls that fits in very nicely with the look of the the dash when off, when on shows graphics that are race car related. Also the face will flip out if you want to fiddle with the controls rather than use the remote.

Combined with a Sony Xplode amp mounted in the trunk the sound is really quite good. I'll try to post some pics and exact model # if anyone is interested.

I just put an Alpine 9856 in my car. I picked it because it had a black (sorta black anyway) face and didn't have the star wars graphics display going on. It sounds great and kind of fits in with the rest of the interior. I don't have an ipod but the radio has an interface for one.

The one that takes the inexpensive cable is the fastest iPod to radio interface available. The cable is inexpensive because the "box" part is built into the radio

Kenwood EZ-500

I put in a new deck a few months back and went with the Kenwood EZ-500.

I chose this deck mainly because it looked good. Not the best reason but in truth the sound isn't going to be great anyway. With the two round dials it has a retro look that fits the dash nicely. I wanted an Alpine but I couldn't get into the look they have on their new decks.

From what I can tell all of the ipod integration boxes have flaws. Alpine probably is the best but the Kenwood solution works fine if you can live with only using playlists on random. Finding actual songs is a PITA. I have 8 playlists setup and listen to them on random which is like having personal radio stations. I have left the ipod in the glovebox for the last few months and have never looked back.
