M.P.G. Expectations for a 86 3.2l?

I've been carefully tracking fuel input and miles and I am at a pretty
consistent 20 m.p.g. Is that normal?

I usually drive weekends, ~100 miles half highway ~ 75/80...

I was told by the previous owner there is a chip that kicks in at 3000 rpm, 80 is about 3200 for me in 5th, so I am pondering going slower for a few weeks to see if that matters.

Input appreciated..,thanks
-Todd

Well going slower always helps because wind resistance isn't linear with speed, but exponential.
I remember from logging at fill ups the mileage of my beetle and if i spent that tank hot footing it ( 80-90 ) then i'd see low 40's, but if i'd stay within speed limit range i can get between 45 and 50 depending on my airconditioner. So the speed does make a difference, as well i'd assume that a chip change probably runs the fuel enrichment a little more aggresively on acceleration.

I used to get anywhere from 16 (city, daily commute), to mid 20s on highway commutes. I used premium gas. Oh, I also had the Steve Wong chip.

It would be more accurate to measure 'smiles per gallon' - the only figure that matters.

high 20s on motorway, low 20s pottering.

I used to get 15-17 daily driving in the winter and 17-19 daily driving in the summer and 21-23 on highway trips (running 90mph) in my '88.

Others have seen anywhere from 20-30 on long trips. I think I could have gotten the mileage that high on trips, but I didn't have the self control to drive that slow.

I got up to 26mpg once on a road trip traveling around 65-70moh with a light foot. That was with the stock exhaust.

Now I have Supertrapps and no Oxygen sensor(still stock chip) and get 18mpg or so. I only get 11-12mpg on the track.

On my '85 Euro w/test pipe and otherwise stock, 23.5 to 25.0mpg no matter how hard I flogged it. Mostly mixed driving highway/city.

I found docs on my chip - its a "Weltmeister TC-6000" CA legal.

I have the original chip in a little black box, how would I tell its the
stock vs the Weltmeister? it has

1267355180

printed on it...is that a stock #?

Thanks for all the great replies.

My completely stock 87gets 16-18 in town, 24 mpg at 70-80 mph, and 27-30 mpg at 55-60 mph. It looks to me that you are right on the money for a mix of town and highway miles.
