What is the best all around street tire?
My recently purchased 86 carrera has these Road Huggers GT-D tires on it. Since the PO had these on and they are practically new i decided to give leave them on for a while.
Not sure i like them. What is the best all around street tires? without spending a boat load?

Michelin Pilot Sports are very sticky and a great street tire. I had themn on my 86 911 and they had incredible hold on corners

It would help not to ask for the "best" and then effectively say "without spending a lot of money". It tends to make people think you're not serious. I assume you mean the best value and you need to define what "all-around street tire" means to you?

Search button +1
No offense guys. You will find that the search will give you far more info than you will get on any one post since many issues have been discussed to the point where no one wants to talk about them. Besides, if you really want to learn about your car, the search button will keep you busy for months. There's good stuff in there. Really.

I just put on a set of Sumitomo HTR Zs that I got from Tirerack.com for $59 apiece. Not sure if that special is still available. Have put close to 200 miles on them in trying to break them in before a track session in a couple of weeks. They were very "greasy" feeling at first but I suppose that comes with most new tires. The ride is tremendous and I'm looking forward to see how they grip on the track...so far so good as they grip much better already. Did tight circles in the local high school parking lot until I almost puked...scrubbed them up nice.

jvreed - thanks
jim - Yes, all around value. I know you can spend some big $$$ for some racing or near racing tires. I dont race, except the occasional autocross. But 95% of the time its just back road twisties and freeways that i find my self.

Is wet weather performance an issue when and where you drive your 911? How important is tire wear? Long distance, high speed driving under hot conditions?

Try this link to Tire Rack.com. I did a search for tires that could be used on a 1986 Porsche Carrera.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/CompareTireResults.jsp?search=true&pagelen=20&pagenum=1&pagemark=1&startIndex=0&width=null&frontRatio=55&frontDiameter=16&frontRatio=55&rearWidth=225%2F&frontSortCode=44950&rearDiameter=16&frontWidth=205%2F&rearSortCode=45750&rearRatio=50&minSpeedRating=V&speed_rating=VR&speed_rating=ZR&speed_rating=WR&speed_rating=YR&RunFlat=All |

Jim - wet weather is not really too important. i would like a tire that is sticky, but not one that i need to replace every 5k. Northern Cal weather mild.
Scott - thanks for the link

You're welcome. A friend of mine ("Carrera 3.5L" on this board) uses Yokohama AVS ES 100's and really likes them. I've driven his car and the tires feel pretty good. They are inexpensive for what you get too - about $85 each at Tire Rack.

You're in Norcal and wet weather isn't important?! Have you looked out the window lately?
![]() I also have had good street service (but my duty cycle is more suburban/highway driving with some very nice canyon twisties thrown in) from Yoko's. I get around three driving seasons (20,000 miles) out of a set with rotation (my wheels are all the same size). Right now I'm 10 months and 5000 miles into a set of Yokohoma AVS ES100's. They're a very good value for the money; I ordered mine through Tire Rack and had a local garage mount and balance them. I installed the wheels on the car myself; I have oil lines to protect. ![]() |

I just fitted a new set of Sumitomo HTR ZII's and they are a great street tyre. Excellent ride quality and minimal road noise. Quite grippy too. I'm pleased with these tyres. Great value for money
![]() Just need to get my camber adjusted properly to prolong street life.

I am very happy w/ my new Fuzion Zri. Really good reviews/ratings and a reasonable price.
Avon Tech M500 seemed very good also; maybe just slightly better, but I couldn't find them locally.

I have had great experience with the Bridgestone SO3's. A bit pricey, but has very good wet and dry performance, reasonable tread life and not too loud. I purchased them from tire rack.

In no particular order...
Bridgestone SO3 Pole positions Bridgestone RE750 Fuzion ZR1 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Toyo Proxes RA-1 Kuhmo Ecsta V700 Dunlop SP8000 I have run all but the Michs and the SO3's. RA-1'a are hands down the best, IMHO, but pricey and will wear quickly. The Fuzions are a Bridgstone spinoff and are a VERY good value and good all around tire. The Bridgstone RE750 is another good budget minded choice. A search will reveal that the SO3 is probably one of the most versatile and best all around choices. If I were in your shoes, or had to make a recommendation, I'd suggest the RE750. The Kuhmo is a good starter track tire. Tires is a very subjective topic, hence, some of the other posters responses. In fact, I'll probably get a group of folks disagreeing with me ![]()

I run Bridgestone RE750's. The previous owner had RE730's. I liked them enough to replace the 730's w/ the 750's. I've always wondered what the diff. would be if I bought Mich. Pilots,

I just bought a set of ES100 (Yoks) instead of SO3s for my daily driver SC. The ES100s seem noiser and and little squishy in comparsion. Two sets of SO3s I have gone through in two years. The SO3s wear very fast for me, I get only about 10K on the rears and about 15K for the fronts. S03s are not cheap either. With 15 inch wheels, choices are more limited too. If money was no object I would stay with the S03s, but do not use them in snow!
