Question 84 3.2 euro engine into 87 USA car. What do I need to swap?

What parts do I need to swap over?

2 complete cars: 1984 euro and an 1987 USA

I need to put the euro engine into the newer G50 car.

Is the engine plug and play or does the harness and DME need to get swapped as well?

Besides using the newer clutch, is there anything else I need to know?

I appreciate the info-
Vinny

Do you think we could swap the DME's before hand and turn the key to see? I don't see any different part numbers for those years...but the 84 is a euro with the higher compression so I would think the DME would be different too.

We need to look at the differences between the flywheels too. 84-86 is a little different than the 87-89. I can't tell from the parts pictures here whether it would bolt on or not. If the ring on the flywheel is different (or not there), the speedo would probably be off.

Also, do you think the G50 bolts on the same way as the 915?

The DME relay is the same but check the part numbers for the ecu's. (The large silver box under seat.) They probably have different engine maps but you could just get SW to burn you a chip to slot into the 87 ECU and you should be good to go

Hey Vinny & Matt.

More info.

In 84 (start of E-series) the 3.2 got Bosch Motronic 2 engine management.

In 87 (start of H-series) the Motronic system on US/Canada/Japan got engine re-mapped.

So I think the motronic DME under the seat has to go with the engine. I don't know if the wiring harness is the same?

Hopefully someone in the know will chime in.

-Joe

wussup Joe!

Thanks for checking that-
The DME will follow the engine.

Matt-
Does your Bentley show the euro wire diagrams as well? We could just compare the two and see if the same pins are used for each DME plug.

At this point I think the euro harness will also go into the blue car. I don't think it's gonna be a big deal.

more DME info re: euro v.s US

Vinny-

Here is the answer from the guru Steve W..

-Joe

For all you DME hackers.
But back to the original question, the Euro chip and Euro box is not set up to recognize any O2 sensor input, so it runs open loop. The Euro boxes can be modified to accept a O2 sensor, by the addition of a network of resistors and capacitors in the upper right corner of the lower analog board where it looks like a bunch of parts are missing, and the installation of a U.S chip. The stock Euro chips, besides running open loop, are programmed with a partially fatter part throttle mixture, and a little more ignition advance right off idle between 1000-2500 rpm, giving the Euro cars apparently better throttle response and low end torque. WOT though is not much different than a stock U.S. chip of similar vintage. Full throttle power output will be about the same as a stock U.S. car. Ignition timing curves are basically the same, with the Euro chips being fatter in certain rpm ranges, and leaner in others. If this chip was used on a stock U.S. car with a cat, it is possible that total acceleration time could decrease because of the fatness of the WOT fuel curve.

For all you DME hackers.

Yea- that pretty much settles it...The USA car will lose the O2 sensor

I don't see the need to attempt a mix and match of parts when we already have everything we need to do it painlessly.

You up for turning some wrenches again joe?
