Stripe and Moulding Removal

I have to remove some old decal pinstripes and the foam and adhesive from behind a door moulding without damaging the paint on a 944. The stripes are very weather beaten and brittle and therefore can't be peeled off, same with the adhesive. I was planning on trying 3M General Adhesive Remover but it isn't very aggresive and I seriously doubt it will work. I have also considered buying one of those rubber disk die grinder attachements and trying that but I've never used one and don't know how well they work.

The paint is pretty old but it's a track car and I don't want to have to respray it anytime soon if I can avoid it. Any pin stripers or bodymen out there with suggestions?

I just bought one to strip the pinstripes off of a car. It worked great. I chucked it in a drill and ran it slow (allthough I have a couple of die grinders). I wish I had bought one years ago.

Tim, can you elaborate? How does this (the rubber disk) not burn the paint? Slow speed?

I agree....those little rubber disks (like a big eraser) work awesome. I didn't believe it years ago when I had to take emblems and adhesive off brand new Lexuses (Lexi?). It does absolutely nothing to the paint....go figure!

I ran it real slow, as I was afraid of damaging the paint. It just peels/rubs the adhesive right off! It left a trail of eraser debris all along the path, which just wiped off. Like I said, I did hit it lightly with a buffer afterwards, (I allready had it out to buff my freshly painted hood) as it had left a slightly dull looking area. It probably would have only required a hand rubbing to polish it back out.

I have spent hours in the past with heat guns, solvents, plastic scrapers etc, trying to remove adhesive residue from various projects. Total time to completely remove full length pinstripes from both sides of car....... 10 minutes!

I used a heat gun and some polishing compound. took a fair amount of time and patience, but did not damage the 15 yr old paint.

Also, let the 3M Adhesive remover soften up everything. Spary it on a couple of times and let it just stew in it. It won't remove anything but it might make them a little bit more less brittle.
