V Belt Snap on 78SC - Chicago Sun
Well, I knew it had to happen sometime.
Today after work wanted to take my 78SC out for a nice ride in Chicago weather when I heard a "snap" 30 seconds after pulling out of the driveway. Sure enough. Broken V-belt. I ordered a replacement belt from our Hosts several months back. I know there are shims to adjust, but what is the best practice when one does NOT have the special-spanner tool that holds the fan in place? any suggestions, most welcome.,,, Tom

"when one does NOT have the special-spanner tool"
Borrow the wrench from a local fellow Porsche owner. Order one from our host; the fans are expensive (do not react the torque with the fan blades) - you could pay for overnight shipping and still be way ahead compared to buying a new fan. Make the tool using bar stock and a pin. Maybe (very big maybe - I haven't tried this) use a fabric strap wrench in place of the spanner. You know of course not to run the engine without the fan working; overheating and engine failure can come quickly. |

When I got my Carrera I thought it a clever idea to by such a tool (among others), just in case. So I did.
Few months later I accidentally found the original tool kit poking around under the front hood. In conclusion - I now have two..

Tom,
To get pulley off ... large Vise-Grips clamping old broken belt tightly while using 6-point 22 mm socket in 1/2" drive impact wrench on the pulley nut!

Matt -- I got it using the advice Early-S gave -- (thanks Early-S) but I'm still ordering the tool from our hosts tonight..
Thanks to all, a few starts later (to ensure proper tension) and I'm good. I hope to be at the Chicago area gathering on Sat! Tom

One of the only parts missing in the original tool kit from my 81 SC (even have that weird looking spark plug remover) and the first to buy from our host and put it in the tool kit with a spare belt. 10,000 miles later they are both still there. I feel your pain: No P-car for a week! That would hurt.
