I drove my friends 80SC 3.6 - exhaust question???

I drove my friends 80 SC with a 3.6, 993 headers, converter, and the muffler has the baffles removed . Absolutely incredible exhaust note. I can't get the beautiful music out of my head.

Question: Is it possible to come close to this exhaust note on my 3.0? I have the stock heat exchangers, cat test pipe and a borla muffler. My car is street driven and my fear is that headers would be too loud.

Any experiences or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

You got the stock muffler? You could always crack it open and gut it. That would give you an idea for only a little coin, and if you like it you can do it right later. SSIs and a dual out muffler might also be an option to consider.

Matthew - Single in/ Single out Borla performance muffler. I would like to keep this on the car because it was a recent purchase and it sounds great.

Headers or SSI??? I am willing to lose my interior heat with the addition of headers.

Any experiences with headers and a single in/ single out muffler?

Unfortunately this is probably going to be something you will have to change. If you go to headers, it wont fit (needs to be dual in) and if you want a better, angrier sound you are going to have the change the muffler.

The power difference between SSIs and Headers is negligible and the sacrifice isn't worth it. SSIs are a great product and unless you have a full prepped race car and are looking for hundredths of a second off your lap time, SSIs will do just as good. Also, remember that you arnt just deleting your heat, you are also kissing your defrost goodbye.

Well thats a trick question because that's not how it works, if you have headers, or even SSIs for that matter, it has to be a dual in muffler with either single or dual outlets. This is because headers are designed in pairs, one for the left bank of cylinders, and one for the right.

Exhaust "tone" is primarily the muffler...duplicating it requires both the same path AND the muffler.

A full flow exhaust with SSIs or headers will not sound the same even with the same manufacturer's muffler if it goes thru a neck down/six into and single inlet to the muff.....just isn't gonna happen.

Will 993 headers fit on a 3.0? This would solve it.

Exhaust "tone" is also determined by displacement, compression ratio, and camshaft profile.

There isn't much you can do to a 3.0 that replicates the 11:1 3.6, but an SSI system with a GOOD sport muffler makes a big difference...

Nope...the flanges would have to be redone on one side. 964 headers would work....

My 3.6 (964) uses 993 heat exchangers and the one side was re worked to fit......closest thing next to SSIs or early HEs out there.....
