Helpful tips: Replacing starter
 

Hello all, just got done installing a new high-torque motor in my car. The solenoid on the old one would get stuck when the starter would get hot....leaving me unable to start the car. Here are a couple of items, which I hope will help the next person who does this;

1. WEAR GOGGLES all kind of crap falls right in your face!

2. A partial engine drop is pretty much a necessity

3. After disconnecting the appropriate fuel lines, etc, put some 3/8 x 8" bolts/ through the motor mounts and motor mount bracket. Put a washer under the head and a washer/nut on the bottom side. Then, lower the motor and "suspend" it on the bolts. This will allow for about 4" of drop and you will not have a jack or jack stands in the way supporting the motor.

4. Access the top starter hex barrel nut by reaching over the top of the tranny with your right hand. The bottom nut is easy. You need an ~ 8" extension and a 10mm hex socket.

5. Two yellow wires, yet only one spade connector on the starter. Either get a 'piggyback' spade connector (allowing 2 connectors) or use an in-line splicer to create "one" wire to connect to the starter

6. You'll most likely have to unstrap the main starter cable to get enough slack to connect to the pole on the starter.

The task took about 2 hours to complete from jacking to dropping.

I picked up the one our host sells.

I've never had to do a partial drop -- but I have an early car.

The Pelican starter is better quality than the one that Perf. sells...

Don't forget to disconnect the battery!

Uhh, yeah, I guess that should have been step 1 :) Cannot take anything for granted.
