Seats and interior

Well I finally got the bug to refurb the interior. Last night I tore out all the carpet, removed the seats, etc. I ordered aj-usa pedals, going to get RS door panels from Appbiz, and I am going with black all around. The car looks great, no rust. It is pretty heavily padded with felt , but everything looks good. I am going to change the shifter bushings while I am in there. I just took the seats to a local shop for a recovering estimate, $650 was their ballpark for fabric or possibly vinyl. Seems kind of steep to me, the seats are Flofit seats not original porsche seats. The Flofit seats new from Seatsource.com are only $350 each for fabric. Anyway, I am looking for seat reccomendations. The Flofits are comfortable, and I probably wont be doing much in the way of racing. At least not on a track. Universal racing seats are all over ebay but are any of them anygood? Oh yeah the previous owner set this up to be a track car, deist 4point harnesses etc. Appreciate any thoughts. '72T targa... more pics in my gallery.

Here's the before photo:

FloFit makes a nice seat. They were OEM on the earlier Saleen Mustangs.

I would seriously look at a set of Recaro SE's. Very similar to the FLoFit for the same cash and they are a direct bolt on.

Quick update, I have all the carpet out and made a new pass side floorboard. I am going to change out the shift bushings while it is easy to access everything. RS door panels from Appbiz are on their way. Got the AJ Usa pedals in and installed them in about 45 minutes (had to run to the hardware store and get stainless 10mm bolts). The hinge on the original gas pedal was a bit rusty so it was a good excuse to get some bling. I also need to decide whether or not to rip out the felt.

might as well keep the felt..it looks to be in great condition, unless there's water damage i can't see and it smells moldy, then i'd shuck or replace. were it me and i didn't plan on tracking, i'd look for original replacement sport seats, but i'm a fan of originality holding the car's value. any pics of the outside? i think restoring a '72 to as near as original would give your car the most value and still always be a joy to drive..but i tend to like time capsules..

Ryan,

I guess I got to this point by accident, not by knowledge. I bought this car because it was a fun ride, not because I knew anything about Porsche, other than as a kid I thought they were the holy grail. I have learned a ton of information a pretty short time. And knowing what I know now I may never have purchased this car, nothing on it, is original. It has been modified quite heavily. I have some of the old paperwork, but it is a long story. In it's defense, it's still solid, and a fun driver. There is a lot of good about this car and I just want to make it as nice as I can, maybe sell it and look for a '73 coupe. Back to the subject, the felt and tub seem perfect, no rust, no water damage at all. I have several pics in the owners gallery and here is one of them... thanks for the input!

wow! it's beautiful..don't sell it! i like the rocker-less look on these early cars. i don't think cookie cutter wheels were a '72 option, but i could be wrong. anyway, you could sell them and buy some beautiful fuchs to match the car. '72's are valued very highly, particularly on this board..you'd be wise to hold onto it and slowly restore more to original. i see you've got updated headlights and they look good. the paint looks fantastic..reminds me a lot of my color. what motor do you have and is it original? is the 2.4 mfi?

How are the mechanics? Do you do your own mechanical work too? If not I so suggest you take it to Allroad Motorsports and have Jimi do any of your work. He is the best German mechanic I have known. Check him out:

I have had the car for about 2 1/2 years and it is in great shape, I have been doing all the mechanical work myself but there really hasn't been much. I was getting ready to put emblems on the car and noticed that the engine number and vin number do not match up. The chassis or vin number is 911 211 0753 and the engine number is 6200439. So from what I can tell, the body is that of a 72 911 T Targa. The engine on the other hand must be a 70 E. There is more to ad to this, I have some of the old owners paperwork on the car and his Bruce Anderson book, in which he has several 72 engine specs highlighted. I was also told the engine had been rebuilt at one point so I have no way of really telling what I have, other than it is MFI. Is it possible that he put a rebuilt 70 2.2 engine built to 72 2.4 specs? I was also told that he raced the car in PCA events, in fact I have a helmet painted to match the car. I read somewhere that the cookie cutters made nice track wheels so I imagine that's why they are on there. The back seats and deck were also removed and covered with carpet. I actualy like that look. I would like to get some Fuchs and recaros but right now one thing$ at a time. The paint that is on the car is a Lexus/Toyota color. It looks pretty good, there are a couple door dings and one tiny hint of a bubble in the paint. It was brown at one time. If I ever strip it down completely it will probably become stock silver.

One more pic, at some point it was updated to a later bumper, why, I have no idea. It looks ok but it would be cool to go back to the earlier style.

it looks like they did a 'good job' on the update, but i agree, you want to backdate it to '72. right now it's stuck between worlds!

update:

Here's my DIY carpet, Apbiz RS door panels and AJ USA Pedals. I actually threw the old flofit seats back in it last night and took it for a spin. I forgot how nice it is to drive! Still a lot left to do, including finding new seats. I also need to re-skin the targa top since it's warm enough now.

it's not a kit, just bulk automotive carpet. I took the old brown carpet out and used it as a pattern and cut my own pieces. The brown carpet was from a previous owner and looked like a DIY job too. The black looks a lot better, it's hard to describe the cheesy fabric that was on the doors and the rear panels. The rear panels now are black carpet and I love ther way they look. The wood dash trim is also from a previous owner. I have been trying to locate soem of the original style dash facia, the vinyl is easy to find but the chrome pieces are not. I was thinking about having some aluminum pieces fabricated that look like the original pieces that hold the vinyl. Sort of exact duplicates of the chrome pieces only aluminum to match the pedals. I love the pedals. If it was all original I wouldn't dream of such modifications, but this whole car is pieced together, that said, it is fun to drive and that is the whole point...

DIY Carpet was like $32.00 (4 yards), I also used about 1 1/2 cans of Super 77 adhesive.

I am also going to make front trunk carpet pieces of the same black carpet. The brown that is in there is in perfect shape, I just think the black will look better.
